My bottle jack has burst its seals. Is it possible to fix it? Anyone had one apart?

If you know the make it should be possible to get seals. Unless it is a Chinese throw away one were you would have to strip it and measure what you need.

See if one of the small Machine Mart trolley jacks would suit.
I carry one in my RRC instead of the screw type bottle jack style thing it comes with.
Much safer than a bottle jack.

Pedantic I know, but can you have a 'screw type' bottle jack ?
My RRC's have all had 2 ton two stage hydraulic jacks from the factory.

I had the red P38 standard one with the vehicle. I cocked it up jacking a big tree stump out of a mates garden, think I blew the seals.
Looked up correct filling procedure and tried with what oil I had at time (diff oil I think it was?) - no luck but still have the jack as spares.
Intention was to replace it when I see a nice one cheap but have to manage with the trolley jack

That's the one. Same one used in p38 and the Disco. For the life of me I cannot remember what I had in the Defender.

I have trolley jacks but not in the car. It is just in case I get a flat. Currently I have no jack in the back.

They do a specific oil for Jacks.

To be equally pedantic I actually said 'screw type bottle jack style thing'.
Perhaps I should have said 'a screw jack that bears a slight resemblance shape wise to a hydraulic bottle jack but isn't hydraulic'
Parts book says Range Rover 'Lifting jack' Part number 592220 superceded by a couple of later part numbers - also screw jacks - & then by the hydraulic bottle jack.
Which type is in your car would probably only really matter for the concours competitor
;)

Neither do I, not such worry with my treads.
Defenders had long bar thing with a leg that would stick out. It fitted into a hole in bumpers and had ratchet that slotted on top - similar to a farm jack
They sure do and it is certainly not diff oil.
Was worth a try, least when it oozes out everywhere I can now be sure seals have gone.

I concede your point, I can't help being pedantic … it's my age :(
