Further test ,at tickover ,with the cap off it doesn`t reach operating temp. just over 1st white line. rad is cold all along the bottom and water in header tank is cold

is it possible that the stat is not opening allowing the water to circulate. its a recent problem, done over 3000 miles since head replaced and this started last week. Fan seems good, cannot stop it when warm.

Is the rad hot across the top and cold across the bottom after warm up?

yes it is

Looking from the front of the car, hot coolant enters the rad from the right hand hose, it should then go down the right hand side of the rad and up the left hand side back to the engine. If the rad is generally hot across the top but cool across the bottom either the rad has no baffle in it or the baffle has failed.

I see your point, I will remove the rad tomorrow and get another one thanks Wammers it makes sense. not likely to be the stat then ?

If the baffle is not present coolant just flows across the top of the rad and never gets cooled. You can check for a baffle by dropping a marble in one side and tilting rad. Marble should not roll across to the other side. Baffle should stop it. Make sure new rad has a baffle there are some about that don't have one. If it has no baffle it's as useful as tits on a Mars bar. Nissens rads are good and have the baffle.

mine has been fine all summer ,did 260 mile trip a couple of weeks ago ,then thurs last week " all hell breaks loose"

I understand, I had similar issues before I tackled my cooling system and followed your threads accordingly.

If you are concerned it’s head then you can get a dye that shows up combustion gasses in water cheap enough. Personally I don’t think it’s that, you had the head off last time
