I need to find a way to filter the incoming air into the cabin.

The fumes I have been getting are missing when no other cars, and are similar to those I have come across with my previous LPG car. So yes I am being attacked by other cars exhausts.

My last car had a pollen filter which helped, any way to do this on a D2?

Seems to be a lot worse with the huge rise in Diesel cars.

There's no way you can stop exhaust fumes getting in other than setting the climate control (assuming you have it) to recirculating - even then it's not 100%.

There is an attempt at a pollen filter across the air intake plenum at the rear of the bonnet opening but even when in good condition (most have disintegrated) they won't stop anything much smaller than a field vole.

The one on the D2 is more of an insect screen than a pollen filter. But you probably need an activated filter to block pollutants entering the cabin since these particles are way too small for a mechanical filter. Check if there's activated foam available for other applications such as aquariums that you can use on your D2.
