Hello,

I replaced my headgasket and torqued all the bolts down to spec. When adding coolant it start to leak the coolant between the head and the block, and not a little, it came out almost as quickly as I added it. the leak is at the back of the motor below the turbo. It didnt do this before I took the head off so I cant imagine I warped the head or the block. Could I have put the wrong head gasket on? Here is what I ordered.
Cylinder Head Gasket 'Elring'
Ref: ERR3618G / Price $22.95
Application: Defender Diesel 2.25L / 2.5NA and 2.5TD not TDI

Any advice would be appreciated.
thank you
Steve

This sounds rather weird - not doubting you at all - but how

Are the bolts the rights ones ? - IOW's are they too long?

I'm completely baffled, There was alot of material I had to clean off the head and the block from the old head that seemed like there may have been some sealer used before. Bolts are correct and matched the old ones in length. Thank you

I did not use gasket seal, is this recommended and if yes what kind? bolts are all new and after removing them again there was nothing in the bolt holes that might have stopped the bolts short.
Any gasket sealer will do it, pretty much anything from Halfords.
You say you had to clean off old sealant, there you go, that's your answer, get sealant.

It's possible that either your head face or block face is warped. Get them checked and maybe skimmed.
But try sealant first.

This is a good guide I used one for my 200tdi rebuild
The 2.25 uses the same gasket and advises fitting dry
The 200tdi can be fitted wrong way round and I nearly did it ,until I noticed the 3 holes were in the wrong place
Your gasket seems to come in one thickness , I think you will, need to take head off and see what went wrong , did you clean all the holes out first of crud and oil check all bolts go to bottom freely
Put a steel rule ove r head and check for warping
Did you torque in sequence from inside out

Well, I think your next step is to check the head and block for being flat with a straight edge - as already mentioned in posts #8 & #10.... steel rule is my normal weapon in this regard .... but ...... other straight edges are available ;) :D

Perhaps the quantity of sealant used is a clue to some warping of the head ? Must say, I do most HG's dry ( unless the book says otherwise )

Got any pictures you could upload to the forum - might help us .... ( might not   :D )

Gasket should be installed dry.

Did you check the flatness of the head, and the swirl chamber protrusion before fitting the head?
