Does anybody have any advice on lowering emissions enough to pass new MOT levels?

I am sure I was tested at a higher level last year AFTER the new regs came in to force but anyway...

On MOT fail it says manufacturers specified limit is 0.74 my reading were around 3.12

So my thoughts are:
1. remove boost pin
2. see if I can fit a CAT converter somewhere
3. try to set fuel pump a bit better

Anybody have any other suggestions?

Thanks

See attachments for the limits. I suspect the peeps who did your mot might have got it wrong on the limits. But your 3.12 is high anyway.

I had same issue this year (with TD5), but I don't think that limit is correct though.

I'd remove boost pin, but I don't think CAT will help as its just a smoke opacity test. Make sure its nice and hot when you take it for retest.

I'd go for the injector cleaner in the tank and then an Italian tune-up - although don't do as I did and get pinged by the rozzers 10mins before MOT test!

Good luck.

Thanks for that, it seems they did make a mistake. I checked last year's MOT (which was June 6th, after the change) and I was tested against a limit of 3.0. I called them but I am just getting the "computer says no" response.

I don't think I will have too much of a problem getting it under 3 but under 0.74 would have been a challenge

get a recording of a diesel engine and have it playing on the stereo! when the tester runs his checks, turn the engine off:cool:

I knew I guy who used to sell Leer jets to the Arabs, they would cut the engines and glide over the airfields so potential customers wouldn't hear how loud they were

I half recollect I read somewhere that there is a sticker or a plate under the bonnet (probably on the slam panel) which states what the limits are for the vehicle. Will have a look under my bonnet later and see what I can find.

After speaking to the tester and the DVSA it turns out that the sticker you mentioned is the key to this. IF the sticker is on the car, i.e the tester can see it he is obliged to test to the limit stated, in my case 0.74. If the sticker has been removed or damaged so it is not readable you will be tested against the 3.0/2.5 limit.

So if you have this sticker on your old Defender I would suggest you remove it.

Itc changed and the new limit is passable for a std 200tdi just.
1, remove the under bonnet sticker if it still has it, that way they have to test to the higher value
2, remove the boost pin
3, wind out the max fuel screw by one full turn

Mine is a 1988 so the sticker probably applies to the old 19j that would have been in it before the 200tdi was fitted. Applies to vehicles between 1979 and 2008
