Hi

My TD5 got 'slightly' wet yesterday when parked up at the tidal Thames. When I came back the car was in the water up to the edge of the bonnet and the horn was sounding non-stop. Managed to open doors and get it towed home by a friend. Now every time I connect the battery, the horn blares non-stop. Question: Is this to do with the alarm most likely or not? The car will NOT start, though windshield wipers etc. seem to work. The horn blaring on a Sunday morning in a residential area is not great. I took out the fuse labeled horn under the driver seat, but it still continues. Yes, the ECU etc. under the drivers seat was pretty much submerged. Apart from drying the car out, anything I should be doing?
Thanks for your help.

makes a mockery of the snorkel, somewhat :eek:
Do you know if your snorkel is 100% water proof? If not, I wouldn't be attempting to start it until I had made sure the air induction side is clean and dry.
Not sure where the horn is on those, but likely under a wing somewhere. You could find the horn and disconnect it at the device.
EDIT
But don't try to start it unless you know there is no water in the air filter etc!

Also remember that water could also have gone in through the exhaust side too.
I would be surprised if you have got away without water getting in with the oils.

And as above do not try to turn over on the starter, turn over by hand first as a min if you are unsure and don’t want to start pulling injectors/glow plugs but remember you have 5 cyl and only 4 glow plugs.

Are you sure it’s the horn sounding? Do you have a back up sounder on the alarm is it that?

But it honestly needs a lot of drying, cleaning and checking out first before I would go anywhere near connecting a battery

Sorry to see that though I bet it ruined your day:(

Did I see non stop horn? :p

Horn(s) are behind the headlights, single tone is N/S

Try a Tupperware box full of rice, dump ecu/bcu in it and leave indoors for a while if a de-humidifier is not within reach.

There’s a long list of things to drain/change after a dunking like that.

Best of.....

If the water has reached the bonnet it will have got into the engine, gear box, transfer box and diffs so all of those want draining and refilling. And probably consider the front wheel swivels and all hubs - water may be sitting in there so they may need dismantling, cleaning and re-greasing. Do not attempt to start the engine until the injectors have been removed and the engine spun to clear the cylinders, there will be water in there and starting up could damage your crank and rods if hydraulically locked up. Flush the chassis out to clear the salt water. Jet wash everything in sight underneath. Many years ago I had an excavator break down on the foreshore on the Isle of Dogs and it could not get back to the crane which was used to lift it over the river wall so it spent a couple of tides completely submerged. The mechanic got it going after purging the cylinders, draining the fuel, changing all the oils and fluids etc. But six months later the electrics packed up especially the alternator, after the salt water corroded everything. Expect lots of problems to crop up even after it has got going again

Thanks all - the water should not really be salty as quite far upstream at Richmond. The very highest point was basically on the photo, but the car was also at an angle, so may not be quite as bad in terms of engine getting totally wet. Here's the blow of a photo taken from distance, so not very clear.... I shall dry thoroughly and then see what I can do! Thanks again.

If it were a 3 bob 200 tdi like mine then taking it to bits and swopping out all the oils might be a laugh, but this is clearly a nice bit of kit and it may be worth claiming on insurance for total loss?
Absolutely - then buy the salvage.:D

I don't think it is a total loss really? Will see, engine did not run whilst in water, so I may be lucky..... + I doubt the insurance would pay out, due to 'negligence' on my part, by parking where i did park, which was a stupid frankly.....
