loss of gears on auto p38

I was driving home last night when light came on dash saying gearbox fault. only one gear. no lights on dash to say what year I in . abs light cakes on and heater, radio went off. when I got home, about 2 miles it went into reverse. but when I turned off battery nearly flat . battery is 4 weeks old. has anyone had this problem or can advise me as to a fix . have spare RR for spairs. oh yes its 2.5 diesel. thanks

Just because the battery is only 4 Weeks old is no guarantee. If the Alternator is no charging it, it will go flat/drop volts and then all sorts of spurious messages appear.
If you can start the engine, look for at least 14.5V at 2,000 RPM with EVERYTHING switched on.

Not on a diesel, diesel charge rate is 13.8 unless the controller has been changed.

Except possibly on late ones I think, but as you say the alternator regulator may well need to be changed and his problem could be a dead alternator.

If you have just put a battery on .Then i would check connections are tight including the positive on the fuse box
