Just for a change I am looking for a little help. I have a disco 200tdi fitted in to my 90.

I am in the process of a chassis change and a bit of paintwork, read as a rebuild.

Obviously I have come to take the engine out and there is more "oil" it it than there should be and a loss of water in the radiator wit a nice oily residue left in the radiator.

Now in the past 2000 miles I have rebuilt the engine and replaced most of the normal parts:

All piston rings, crank bearings, big end bearings, head gasket, recon turbo, recon fuel pump, new glow plugs, can belt, water pump etc etc. you get the idea, it wasn't a cheap rebuild. I sent the head away and had that skimmed and checked, the block I again sent away and had the bores honed and all checked.

I have also replaced the radiator and the intercooler.

I am at a total loss to what I have done wrong, as I must have because you shouldn't be able to kill an engine in 2000miles.

I have check the radiator and it pressure tested fine, so it isn't oil or water passing between the radiator and oil cooler.

The engine is still bolted in the chassis at the moment but there isn't a lot else left on the chassis so not the easiest to do a compression test etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have pressure tested the radiator and this is fine, I am hoping for the head gasket but at 2000 miles since rebuild I an a little disappointed, I used an elring gasket so not a cheap eBay special.
if the head had very very hot prior they can move again straight away or sometime after

I have now managed to get to the engine part of my chassis replacement. Long story lol.

I have taken the head off this morning and I can see no problems with the head gasket or block.

There is oil coming leaking from one of the valves into one of the piston bore but that is something easily sorted..

There is loads of sludge in the breather pipes etc, no water in the radiator and too much "oil/water" in the sump when I drained it.

Radiator has been pressure tested and that is fine, no leaks between oil cooler and radiator.

How can the water be getting in to the engine? Can anyone help or have a sugestion as I am getting fed up with it now :-(

anything is possible but a seep between head and gasket is more likely, you can see crack in block if you wipe bore clean a crack should show as a faint rusty line over night

Has the 200 got small core plugs under the rocker cover/top of head?
An old 2.5nad I was attempting to get running had a loose one which I never noticed, filling it up with water through the rad tank and it was taking a lot of water, pulled the dipstick out and a jet of water shot out.

Not the ones in the block, small ones in the head, no one replaced them I don't think.

There is 2 small ones in the head and one larger one at the rear of the head, all of these were replaced when I rebuilt it. The water is filling up the sump so not leaking out anywhere.

Just to make my thoughts clear:)
These core plugs you have replaced in the head...
Were any of them under the rocker cover?
The NAD has some there and they seal off a waterway, one of mine was loose and the coolent went into the sump. I don't even know if the 200 has plugs under the rocker cover.

Ive changed head gaskets before where there was no sign at all of any failure, yet the new gasket sorted the issue out.

Get quite a few compressor haad gaskets at work causing pressurising problems, new gasket sorted the problem and for the lif of me I cannot see where on the old gasket the problem was.

I notice your head and pistons seem quite sooty, way more sooty than I would expect to see, has the inj pump been tweaked?

Looking at the picture of the block, the two holes above the 3rd cylinder from the left seem to have a crack between them. Might just be a scratch mark but take a close look.
