I am thinking of moving up from my 2001 p38 4.0. I have seen a nice condition 2005 4.2sc with 128k full service history on it for £4900. Looked at it and seen a slight coolant leak from the lower thermostat hose coupling seller says not seen it before but had alternator replaced in November could it be a loose connection from that if it had been taken off? for belt access?. All the buttons all the suspension height's worked seats windows touchscreen, steering motor reversing camera even the heated seats, and idled perfect to rattles or knocks.

What i'm looking for is info on what these engines are like compared to the old p38's and what sort of faults creep up on them and how many miles are these engines and gear boxes good for.

Thank to any reply's

They have their foibles like every green oval and without being harsh , there are so many threads on this already, I'm surprised you didnt trip over them on the way to make this thread. All the answers are there if you just search. Enjoy the hours of reading :)

Jag engine is generally bombproof, but the valley pipe will give issue at that mileage so best budget to get that done.. :)

Also at that mileage the G'box is due a service, well actually it's due its 2nd and tbh i doubt its been done so budget for that too. :)

I could give all the familiars about the 6hp26 but eh, i will if ya ask nicely ;)

Is the Jag V8 really bomb proof? The one in my son in laws Jag certainly was not.

Depends what year, the 4.2 and 4.4 are bombproof.

The 3.2 and 4.0 suffered from nikasil liners failing from the sulfur content in fuel. Its ok now

The 2nd was the timing chain guide rails failing but that was rectified in the 4.2 and 4.4.

unlike all conventional LR engine's Jaguar actually learnt and rectified any issues, in the later iterations.

Sorry all for the slow reply been doing the hours of reading in other threads about the 4.2. Been trying to find out about the valley pipe but could only find information on it on Jaguar sties. Gearbox service doesn't look too bad or much worse than the one on the p38 just more selective fluid. But cant do servicing or much work on cars anymore due to health decline so someone else gets to do the work.

What is a decent price to pay for a 2005 model these days?

Its the ZF6hp26 which takes a special fluid change it every 60k.

ZF LIFEGARD 6 is the only fluid it should have, if you use conventional dextron your gearbox will eat itself immediately..

The fill and drain is a right mission.

This video is a good reference to all you have to do.

if you're unsure as to whether its been serviced the size of the sump bolts will tell you.

All stock ZF 6hp gearboxes came from the factory with T27 torx heads which strip all the time, all kits come with uprated t40 heads so if its been serviced in the past and you don't know thats a good indicator.

Another thing is the megatronix seal will leak after a set period of time and drop Tranny fluid all over your driveway, the proper ZF kit which is around £260 will have.

7ltrs or Lifegard

A new plastic sump - the filter is housed within the sump all as one unit.

A new megatronix seal

21 T40 bolts

And other misc items as well as an instruction boolet, as the drain and fill procedure has to be followed to the letter.

If you're not doing this yourself make sure it is taken to a specialist or someone competent.

If the procedure isn't done correctly the gearbox will be toast.

This Box is the best one fitted to any RR apart form the Torqeflite of the early RRC ;)

It'll happily handle 700nm even though it is rated at 600nm :)

if well maintained it will outlast the car...

That is good to know about the gearbox, don't mind the extra price for the kit if its going to make it last longer. Any other service tips?

Well bit the bullet and bought the l322 4.2, did consider the sports for a few moments then thought nope stick with full size. Only picked it up last Monday all buttons work and the heated seats something I never got to work on my p38's.

All that's missing is the headphones for the rear screens and the remote any suggestions on them or where to get replacements?.

The bracket for the venture cam is missing but will make a new one from old dash cam mount and 3d printer as the venture cam is actually working someone has replaced battery in it already.

So to start off on safe side have already ordered full zf 6 fluid zf filter and sleeve. So thanks to Henry_b for the pointer on to do that one first.

Plus found a video on youtube of a fluid change on the 4.4 2006 with the zf6 which looked a lot easier than on a jag or RRS

That's a great writeup explains a lot of what doesn't get mentioned in videos. Thanks for pointing it out now for the stuff to arrive and getting the weather to do it and a healthy day.

Plus to get pictures of both the rangies together.

Aye 'ave to wait for the weather, way too cold at the moment to do anything!! ;)

And would be nice to see the "family" together!!

Hopefully the P38 takes well to the new sibling ;)
