It's in for it's mot tomorrow and hoping they don't pick it up. It's to the rear chassis on the drivers side by the air bags - see pics.

These are the only bit's I've noticed so keep your fingers crossed

If they don't pick that up, they shouldn't be MOT testers.

No help r.e garage sorry

Nothing wrong with hoping - the welding will be getting done in any case, just need someone to do it as it's not a job I am willing or able to attempt (else it would have been done already).

Thanks for the response

I've had good experiences with a mobile welder local to me. Might be worth a google
Welding wise i hope ;) unless you're harbouring Freelandering behind closed doors

Ideally young man you ought to be looking at a new rear 1/4 chassis or if she's a keeper then get her on a new one or you'll be chasing rot again in a year or 2 :(

Defo search mobile weldering guys.

Personally wouldn’t even waste my money on an MOT.
Get it welded up first.

Would the garage you are doing MOT at not do it for you? I know it may be more than a mobile guy but if you need the car probably quickest solution although maybe a bit more money.

You've all called me out and decided its best not throw money down the drain so going to get it looked at pre-MOT - I've got 5 days left on it in any case. Any one got any idea how much this will cost to get done as spoken to a few garages and they want to see it first (obviously!).

I'm fearing a new rear chassis as @1988smithy has noted although this isn't making me smile at the thoght of the cost for this, not least as I don't have a drive let alone a garage to take the work on :(

Thankfully it's not my daily drive but this still doesn't help.

I believe it was @dieseldog69 who mooted a rear 1/4 ;)

A decent mobile automotive welder could probably do it on the drive, prices seem to start at £50 as a minimum, few hours work there. I'd be prepared for quotes of £250 upwards but that's an absolute guess.

If you go for a new rear 1/4 you could do a lot of the prep before welder shows up, get it safely on axle stands and drop the fuel tank etc

So the garage I was taking the disco to this morning has said they are unable to weld it for one reason or another. Realistically I just don't think they fancied it from their attitude. I have spoken to another who was recommended by a friend of a friend who is willing to take a look at it on Monday and let me know.

In the meantime considering the option posed by some of you above it has gotten me thinking if welding is the right way to go or if replacing the rear 1/4,1/2 or indeed full chassis is the better option.

Throwing aside the cost element (the banks will be earning their crust whatever the option) and as I am looking on the disco being a long term keeper, what would be your suggestions? Obviously full replacement would be best however would replacing rear 1/4 or 1/2 be just as good? Do the front ends tend to rot the same as the rear?

Your experienced input is awaited!

Keeper = Galvanized full chassis and full steering and suspension overhaul while you're in there and it will be tip top for another ten years at least.

This is a great price

The rears go first, hence the progressive replacement options starting at the rear. Which one you need depends upon how far forward the rot goes. If you are lucky you may get away with just the rear quarter in which case it could be a driveway job for a decent welder and you could do most of the preparation yourself. This is the first of a series of amateur videos which if you can wade through them, will give an idea of the work required.

Watched a load of his stuff he's quite funny. His welding don't look too clever though

Just be careful and check the front of the chassis as well , there are a few places, on the downward slope behind the front wheel where they can also catch muck internally and rust through. As it looks like the one you have was not cared for in the past, I would be going over the whole thing very carefully before deciding which direction to take.

Cheers

Hence my use of the word amateur (though my own welding skills are zero). However, I also quite warm to him. His life seems to have since moved on to a narrow boat and sadly not altogether happily. :(

Yes, I gather he got divorced but seemed to get himself together on his boat then got assaulted recently which knocked him about mentally :( I do enjoy watching anything he uploads
