Jeep 4.0 Engine

Gearbox arrived... unfortunately it's got the wrong output shaft, but for the price I couldn't say no.

It's off to American Automatics, for a full teardown, output shaft swap and inspection and then we should be good to go.

Latest update... my torque converter is not compatible with the flexplate/flywheel supplied by Novak in the kit.

My flexplate is 3 bolt 10.75 inch spacing (standard chevrolet), however my torque converter is 6 bolt 11.5 inch spacing (heavy duty). It also has a very low stall speed as it was designed to sit behind a massive torque monster 6+ litre V8 so even if it fitted, would probably bog my little jeep 4 litre engine down.

Therefore I have decided to acquire a new torque converter which will work with the Jeep flexplate and also give me a higher stall for a bit more performance off the line.

Hughes performance in the USA supply dual bolt pattern converters compatible with the 4l80e... I guess that's my next stop and a bargain at only £450 :( If I ever upgrade to a V8 in the future I can reuse the converter so it's not all bad.

Just found this thread and am loving your work,I am a big fan of that straight six had one in a cherokee ,super smooth and would exceed 100mph without effort.( 140,000 miles never missed a beat and would smoke the tyre in 2 wheel drive mode.. Keep us informed please.
 
Looking for some advice toward installing a jeep 4.0 inline 6 into my Defender 110.

The reason I want to use the Jeep 6 is due to the fact I have one sitting right here in my Grand Cherokee with only 90,000 miles on it in perfect working order.

This is an utterly fantastic engine with a legendary reputation for reliability and low end torque with similar power figures to the land rover 4.0 v8, but without any of the liner issues.

What is the best way to put this engine in my Defender?

Should I swap the jeep automatic transmission and transfer case into the Defender?

Or is it possible to bolt the engine to the land rover gearbox? (LT-77 in my case) Obviously the bell housing would need an adapter.

Anyone done this swap before?

This is all possible, it comes down to how much you are prepared to spend and your aptitude for mechanical engineering and design.

If it was me I would look at dropping the engine mated to a LR R380 gearbox to keep the drive from the gearboxes back stock (read easier to get parts for etc.) I would not put it onto an LT77 - I cannot stress enough how much I would not do this. You will tear it apart very quickly, especially if this engine has legendary low down torque, so in your case maybe the Jeep auto is the way to go, but work from the transfer-box position forward if you can.

As for mating them - you will want to become friends with a fabricator/machine shop who can produce accurately cut and and drilled plates and adaptors etc.
 
I also had the 4.0 in a Cherokee - same experience as you Adrian - beast of an engine, mine just needed a new plug on no.3 every now and again 'cause the LPG made it run hot. I wouldn't imagine the torque figures to exceed that of a TD5 etc lower down but it's got more than most petrol engines for sure.
