To be honest, I miss the sea when I'm too far away from it.
After numerous years, you tend to become accustomed to it always being there.

To be honest, I think that the "industrial heritage" in South Wales has been a tad overplayed.

It's not all coal mines and "How Green Was My Valley", Merthyr had an iron works too and Swansea was the world capital of copper smelting a long time ago. And the last time I heard any group singing in the streets it wasn't men coming home black from the pit with "Calon Lan" on their lips, it was a load of beer soaked yobs chanting "It's comin' 'ome"!

Having said that, yes, there's some stunning scenery in South Wales from the coastal areas to the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons; the SAS like the scenery so much that they send their soldiers there to the top of Pen-y-Fan.

Cardiff and Swansea now have their "Maritime Quarters" and those whole areas have been totally redeveloped. "Cardiff Bay" is now full of bars and restaurants.

There's also plenty of castles to explore, some still standing, some falling over and others completely fallen down.

Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire are both very beautiful areas of the country to visit too, but don't expect any Ibiza type night life!

Looks like my trip this year will actually be in the area of North Yorkshire rather than Wales now.
Plenty to do oop there too like .... stunning scenery, rolling hills and .... so many reminders of its great industrial age: collieries, ironworks, cottages, a canal, steam railway, schools, pubs and more, all dating back to Georgian and Victorian times.

I could drive there from South Wales, so that's not a big deal, thanks.
I've not booked an "holiday residence" yet, so basing myself in the Cornwall area is still an option. South wales seemed like an easy place to get to from the ferry, and is close enough to the many mining things down that way.
Blaenavon mining centre museum, Dan-Yr-Ogof Caves, Big Pit, Rhondda Valley history park. More?
