I recently purchased a 04 Freelander TD4 sport premium.

The ad stated impeccable, 85k mileage. Fully stamped up to date service history. New Mot etc etc. Wouldn't budge on the price so surely it couldn't be that terrible.

Got it home (330 miles away) to find a beer can in place of a small 100mm ish hose on the front left of the engine & covered in tin foil with the original hose split down the middle then wrapped around the foil (essentially disguising it)

Not only that but hideous dirty black oil splattered everywhere. Clearly NOT recently serviced at all.

Needless to say I'm mortified. This little thing was my dream car in the sense of what I can actually afford & I waited an age to get it :(

Scrap job? It drives fine engine sounds quiet actually not rattles etc.

Forgive the essay I'm dying inside & apologies again for the wall of text

Thanks I figured with oil splat like that it's it even worth getting the pipe but I think I will as it drives at least (not that I'm driving it) in fear if making it worse.

I did forget to mention that I only have myself to blame by not inspecting thoroughly :/

Nah we all make mistakes eh?

I'm sure it'll be a simple'ish fix ;)

looks like either the iat-sensor and its housing missing ( where's the wiring to the plug )
with_iat_sensor.jpg

or wrong hose length from the intercooler ..
without_iat_sensor.jpg

no idea what year .. LR or bmw .. changed that ..

either way that hose is under turbo air pressure ..
and bodge probably leaks ..
( a tiny bit of oil in the intercooler hose / duct be normal )

should be an easy fix ..

Thank you I shall measure properly asap & look up what they're supposed to be size wise. I'm yet to remove the foil totally I couldn't deal with it at the time.

Yes it is my own fault I do only have myself to blame. I admit i didnt inspect thoroughly. The jubilee clips were still secured at both ends so had no clue.
Fair enough it can be fixed however there are a few more checks you will need to do, I am trying to find the guide that somebody else has put together but its late and may not be able to provide until the morning. Welcome to Freelander ownership by the way :) Much better than owning a P38 they seem bloody clueless
