sorry I know that this is a very basic question, but it is now getting cold and wet and I have to work on the vehicle outside, so in order to save discomfort can someone tell me where is the fuel filter on a 2002 TD4 and how do I get to it ?

My Haynes manual only mentions one in the engine bay which ours doesn't seem to have.

thanks

It helps to remove the wheel and arch lining.... although it can be accessed (with a little difficulty) from underneath (but not recommended when you get an face full of diesel).

Phil.
You will most certainly find it behind the OS rear wheel arch liner as these pics show below

You are best to remove the whole unit to replace the filter, other wise you will have trouble trying to release it from the tray.

all will become clear once you have the unit off the car, I keep a spare as I remove mine each spring to clean and change over the filter anyways. good luck Arctic2

Thanks for these pictures.
I changed the filter today.
I think that they might be a special place in hell reserved for whoever designed this thing.
I had to hammer the old filter out of the plastic tube as it was stuck in there so tightly.

Yes I had the same trouble I added some multipurpose grease into the case before refitting for nest time Spring 2016 I replace again the fuel filter,

Hi know this is an old thread but
ARTIC2
In 1 of your pics you posted above there is a snapped spade connector,
What’s this off mate as I have just changed my fuel filter and have the same?
Cheers
Andy

I think it’s an earth Andy on the second picture down on the fuel filter housing there’s a little metal tab i think it goes on there if I remember rightly.

AS above it is an earth wire which fits onto a metal tab, on mine it had corroded so I made a new one but you can purchase them.

Cheers I couldn’t see it when I had it off, but I’ll give it another look when I do the brakes.
Got what I think is a fuel fault, when I sit at around 50-60mph feels like a miss fire or fuel starvation and engine management light comes on and limited power but no codes. And goes off when drop down to slower speeds. Thought it might of been a blocked filter so changed it but no luck

Hi mate
Turned out to be a poor connection on 1 of the injector elec connections,
I took the plugs off and gleaned them up just with a terminal screwdriver and some contact cleaner spray and popped them back on,
Faults not returned since
