Just curious, what is the mpg at 140kmph?

I took the TD5 90 on the motorway to see how it would cope at 140kmph...(really that's around 130kmph when I measured it on the GPS). Needless to say a 100km trip at that speed drained quite a bit of the tank...but does anyone know what the figures would be? I have no idea as my fuel pump float is bent and doesn't show correctly.

You'd have to top to top it, over your distance, and work it out. :)

I would agree with Flat, with the total lack of aerodynamcis its going to be terrible on fuel.

From what ive worked out when doing 80 on the way back from places my mpg drops from an average of 26 (crusing at 65/70) to about 18.

Pretty rough calculations but gives you an idea. Best spend is 60, managed 30mpg+ doing that.

60-65 seems to be the ‘sweet spot’ in a defender imo

Agree 60mph is the best cruising speed, I have found with nearly every vehicle I have owned when the speedo needle is in the straight up 12oclock position that is the best cruising speed. Unfortunately sometimes that is above the legal limit, on my Volvo XC90 12 oclock is 80 mph. On others it has been lower speeds.
Re mpg, I travelled back from Wales in my TD5 doing mostly 70mph and got approx 25mpg (300 miles full tank to fuel light just coming on) so I think pushing it to 80 mph this would drop to 18 mpg.

Thanks for your replies. I find 80-90kph is the sweet spot too, but it is rather slow. I have a feeling my fuel pump is on its way out as there doesn't seem to be enough fuel getting to the engine at high revs. Air flow seems to be unhindered and I've changed the MAF sensor for a new one (Siemens one).

Straight up on my bike is about 135!

I always thought the second half of the speedo (100-200kph) was pure British optimism!
My 12j's 68bhp and 1.67 transfer box might get me to 100 on a long downhill stretch if given enough time.
