Engine oil works OK, if it is cleanish. Obviously, it is necessary to limit the quantity to prevent overspill.
If I was going to use oil, I would use used gear oil, or even chain oil, which is quite sticky.

I think , the problem is that a lot of peeps do not allow for the cleaning of the inside of the chassis. It is amazing how much mud they can contain.

Best applied to a newish chassis, or thoroughly washed out. Not everyone abuses a chassis like you do. Most silt will be only in the rear section if you don't drive through water.
