I have been looking into buying a Defender for over almost a decade now but they are very rare on the island. I have finally found a 1986 petrol engine 110 pick up. I want to install a diesel engine and make it my every day car. What engine can I fit it? Point to be considered is that I am not in the UK and I will either need to import parts or salvage part from Discovery.

Welcome to LZ, Mate! :)

That isn't a Defender, they weren't made at that time. It is a One Ten.

2.5 Naturally Aspirated or 2.5 Turbodiesel are the standard options, but it is fairly easy to fit a 200 or 300Tdi Discovery engine, there are guides to how to do this on the forum.

Just out of interest, why don't you want to keep the 2.5 petrol? They are one of the better engines landrover made.

Hi Turboman,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I understand that he standard gearbox on that particular One Ten would be the LT77. Will the 300Tdi Disco engine fit or should I also change the gearbox to the R380?

I want to change the engine because of the low mpg and for more power.

Where can I find the guides on the forum?

As far as I know, your gearbox and bellhousing will fit, the blocks are all the same.
Tdi isn't much more powerful than 2.5 petrol, economy will be better, but if you don't do a lot of miles it may take a long time to pay for itself.
