Hello

Ive recently purchased a 2000 freelander 1 td4 gs for £695 apart from needing to fit a new aerial at the base and a front abs sensor everything is spot on, but im wanting to do a service on it for piece of mind but im wanting opinions on how easy a job it is, and if its worth doingg

Are you asking is the service easy to do and worth doing. If so the first part of the answer is yes, relatively easy for a basic service, e.g. Oils filters etc. The second part is impossible for us to answer without seeing the car. If it is very likely to fail it's next mot on a load of things then no, it's not worth doing.

Col

Hi col thanks for the reply

Yes i was wanting to know how easy it is, the cars passed every mot since 2012 thats the last time it needed any work doing, the cars only got 107,000 on it

HI Decklan.
Yes well worth doing a service on the Td4, that is unless you have proof it was done within the last 6 months, even then personally I would change the oil, all the filters, clean out the manifold, clean the EGR, & MAP sensor, check and change the intercooler pipe if needed, this way you know when it was last done, and you can then always start from that point onwards, it also gets you to know your way round the engine etc.

Check all vacuum hoses for chaffing, you can by pass the EGR if you like ease of the work out of 10 I would say 7 with 1 being really hard, go for it.

Get a manual for it if you don't already have one. The Haynes manuals cover all the servicing needs for the different intervals. Also get a good trolly Jack and decent axle stands.

Brilliant really appreciate the help guys, my plan is to get a haynes manual and do it myself even the abs sensor that halfords wanted £450 to do, do you have any links to websites for the service kits please

Wheel off, unbolt and unplug old sensor, fit new sensor, wheel on. I do love these fairytale quotes that come in on here.

JGS motor factors (ebay)
Halfords for tools around Christmas - deals appear. Avoid their profit-harvesting ‘services’ - I bought a single wiper once, and they offered fitting (unclip/clip) for £15!!! My farmer uncle would call that a ‘catchpenny’ service.

All above are used and approved by me...

A 2000 FL1 wheel sensor won't come out easily as it will have rusted in. However providing the bolt comes out without shearing off, you can destroy the faulty sensor to remove it. The hole can then be cleaned out and new one fitted.;)

I know - I’ve done it on an 02 - but... £450?!

My daughter works for Halfrauds, sometimes on fits ... she did an Audi headlight bulb change, the owner tipped her a £20, cos they is a faff to do through the wheelarch ...but she has ickle hands and it's not such a faff ...

Good on her. But... I’d rather have the faff. ;)

Any tips on removing the sensor, as ive had a look today and its very well in place, there also isnt a bolt holding it in, it looks like a push fit. Got the part coming tomorrow

Use a good pair of mole grips and slowly turn clockwise & anticlockwise, slowly mid it the sensor sheers off then you will have to drill it out, or drill a 3mm hole in the sensor if it as sheered of flush then screw in a wood screw and use this a lever, maybe use a small claw hammer as a lever or a small jemmie bar as a lever, make sure you have cleaned round the sensor of all debris loose rust etc as you do not want any particles falling into the sensor office/hole, even use an hoover as you go along, few photo's of how I removed a broken off sensor on a friends R40, you may have trim the new sensor if the fit is tight, and also use some copper grease good luck.
