G'day, I have a 300Tdi rear main leak, 5000km ago I had a mechanic replace with a genuine seal, now it has failed .it appears to of melted to the crank and outer surface of seal. Photo shows material scraped off outer side of seal??? Has anyone seen this before and how could it happen

I would guess that either it wasn't a genuine seal, (looks more like a cheap paper gasket) or it wasn't fitted properly or both. Did the mechanic clean the surfaces of all crud before fitting?

99/100 it was a gunuine seal weather it was fitted and clean properly i cant say
