went to check out a 2003 disco diezel auto with 170.000 on the clock for £2.250 to good to be true i thought and i was right oil all over the engine and even on the gearbox so i walked away but out of curiosity what would cause all that i mean the engine sounded lovely

Spell-check, leek & diezel o_O
A tad harsh there, but in fairness, this is a leek, or five of them ....

When discussing a leak, there are a number of different ones;
a puddle or a pool of liquid where there shouldn't be one,
some information which is supposed to be secret but ended up on t'interweb
a gas or other vapour escaping from where it shouldn't escape.
This is also a Leak ....

Nice pictures Brian but I'm assuming the OP is referring to what is under the vehicle rather than that which is carried, by the farming community, in the back ;)

Not putting the dip stick back. Dropping the top up cap down a grid. Over zealous linkage lubrication. Discarded plastic oil containers on the manifold. Clumsy filling. Parking too close to a burgeoning oil rig. Land Rover badge.

Rocker cover gasket not fitted correctly. :oops::oops::oops:
