1976 series 3 rebuild

Finally my brake problems seem to be sorted! swapped my pedal assembly which is defender/ series mix for a straight series setup. turned out the fault was the pushrod in the servo had come out of alignment so was putting pressure on the wrong side of the master cylinder which was causing the brakes to bind on. Another benefit of the series set up is that as it sits lower than the defender one, i can get rid of the old reservoir with its hose feeding the master cylinder and just have a reservoir that sits straight on top of the cylinder ( getting rid of any potential air locks and issues the rubber hose could cause)



Also painted up my sunvisor ready for fitting at some point





Stripped winch, it needs a new oil seal, new bearings, and a new bracket making for the arm to engage with the starter dog ( which i need to get haha)



Should look quite good when fitted (also stuck the forum sticker on from leafers)

Hi Sam, ive been occasionally on the forums and keep noticing this thread, absolutely fantastic job, its inspiring me on my own series 3 project, im at the rolling chassis stage about to rebuild it, but i noticed you were located near kimbolton/huntingdon? Unless im wrong! I live very near closer to cambridge, if its not too nosey i would love the opportunity to come and have a look! Let us know (somehow) and itd be great to get in touch! And again well done its been fascinating reading through this thread

Cheers, its getting a second rebuild now after an incident with a tractor, its in the members vehicles/ projects forum on here.

Unfortunately no where near Im afraid, Im in Holyhead up in North Wales. If you're ever getting the ferry to Ireland you're more than welcome to pop round though

Ah my mistake, theres another garage with that name! Dam tractors, got 4 myself, was it in an accident then id assume? Thats a real shame! Whats the damage? Big shame for a lot of effort
 
Yeah at night, he didnt have his marker lights on so assumed it was a car a lot further down the road as only saw the 2 narrow dim headlamps in the middle, no-one was hurt so thats the main thing
Means I get to do the jobs Ive been putting off now though like adding gauges and my winch so thats one silver lining haha.

Yeah good job noones hurt, farmers always joke about the yellow beacons as you cant possibly not see one, but at night its clearly a different story, i'll keep following the other thread and best of luck buddy!

He didnt have the beacon on either, only the two **** poor candles on the front, if he did I might have realised it was a tractor haha. It was a long straight, hence why I thought it was a normal car further away

I dont blame ya, If it was me in that landy of yours i would be too dreamy about it to pay attention to the road haha!
 
Been fiddling with the brake servo tonight, the one that was on it had the pushrod come loose so it was doing funny things to the pedal (pedal was jammed solid to the topand brakes started binding), pulled brake toweroff and swapped servo for a new one and all is good again

I have also got around to finally properly fitting my £100 aeroparts winch which Im happy with, I just have to fabup some drive shaft support brackets. I have had it working by winding it with an electric drill and I can report it runs nice (if a little noisy due to still being on the origina bearings, replacing them is a job for when I can afford new ones) The number plate is a little in the way but I'll sort that when I fit the new number plates.





You may notice I have a slightly different front end on, one consequence of the accident was I fancied a change from the placcy grill so went for a rocky mountain one. Ive done more miles than I ever have this year since I re-rebuilt it and have loved every minute of it

Thanks for bringing me back to look at that stunner, is that front bumper the sort like the coastguard/seaside rope/winch type? You could put the old style reg plates on maybe, i think 1976 is the cutoff year for black plates IIRC, just a thought :)

Yeah thats the one, I got it off a scrap series 2 thats not worth saving (says something about how bad it was when the aluminium baseplate of the winch had corroded), shame really but all steel was almost completely disintegrated.

I have a heritage certificate for it which says it was built in December 1975 so is actually already tax exempt so when I get new plates I'll put the old style ones on there :)

Iirc black plates are related to year not historic status and is pre '72.

In a way its a bit silly as it means that after the government spending so many thousands on modern numbeplate standards you can revert to the 60s method in 40 years

That's interesting....if a little unclear.

Does that mean black and silver plates have changed to '75 or that's it will continue to change with rolling historic status?
 
I run black and silvers on my '79. Not strictly speaking legit but makes other drivers aware of its classic status and more tolerant of slower speeds I find. I've had police cars directly behind me on several occasions and never been pulled. Fortunately they have much bigger things to worry about.

Photobucket stopped free 3rd party hosting (putting pic's on their site to be displayed on other sites/forums) and started charging for it. Most peeps didn't want to pay hundreds of £ per year for 3rd party hosting to be turned on again.
