freelander diesel 1998 rear diff

hello im new to landyzone so please be gentle,i bought my freelander with 91000 miles on her but no propshaft so i bought a second hand prop bolted it on straight away there was a knocking that seemed to come from the back of the car when i turned a corner within less than a mile i turned around and took the prop off, there's oil leaking from the rear diff i have every mot with the car and the diff leak has been an advisory for about 4 years on the trot . my friend has told me its the transfer box but he didnt go in the car with the propshaft fitted. could the rear diff cause the knocking.thanks mark
