2000 Defender TD5. Thinking about renewing it as I know it's not been done in years, if ever. When i had a disco 2 it was recommended to use the cold climate stuff (STC50519/Ravenol SSF).

Should I be using this on a defender too? I haven't even looked at the Haynes book I know it will just say use atf! Must be the same steering pump

Do you visit Alaska or the Yukon regularly in winter with your TD5?

Not too often no!!! I was just curious because people go on about it with the TD5 discos. I know ACE systems like it, but could never understand why the PAS would also need it.
In any hydraulic system the oil is going to get contaminated over time with particles of metal / dust / seal or moisture etc. As it is nearly a closed system it will just keep recirculating all this debris around the system. Any particles will act as an abrasive over time and increase wear rates which in itself will increase the debris count. Obviously draining and replacing the fluid removes most of the debris and will help to improve component lifespans.

The D3 uses the same cold climate stuff, its not dear so why not use it? plus you are only really ever going to do it once.
From memory less than a litre.
