i have a 2008 Discovery 3 TDV6 loosing coolant - possible head gasket gone, its been into a main dealer and they have carried out leak test and say its a internal leak but at the same time wont 100% confirm it. ive done some digging around over the weekend and everyone seems to be surprised when they hear TDV6 head gasket gone. could you please make some suggestions much appreciated.:(

My previous 07 D3 suffered from a head gasket failure and probable cracked valves and heads (didn't pay to diagnose any further). When I looked online I couldn't find any trace of anyone else having the same problem. When they quoted me 9.5k for fitting a new engine I cut my losses and got rid. This was the second engine with only 30k miles on it!

Never seen a TDV6 head gasket fail. Have seen a few issues with cracked blocks though...

Before going down that route, check the EGR coolers. Will give very similar symptoms to head gasket issues, and are a whole lot cheaper to replace than head gaskets, or an engine...

Looked at a 2006 LR3 TDV6 today and was told by the guy in the garage the head gasket needed replacing. He 'guaranteed the engine was fine other than that though it had no battery and he didn't want to start to in case it would overheat but agreed to do so if i was buying it and test it immediately prior to purchase. Id need it to check suspensions anyway as it was sitting down at the rear. The oil filler cap was clean and the dipstick was pure oil only and no sign of any oil/water grunge. I probably should run mile but ... I always liked them and had a few Discos and am an amateur mechanic so not phased by hard graft. Having read many posts, there seems to be varying trains of thought from hose bleed valves to EGR coolers to thermostat housings or a full bullet head gasket and heads (2 i expect ?).
I would greatly value someones wise advice and direction.

Run a mile.

Sounds like a lemon and D3's are plentiful so just buy a running one.

Right - gamble taken and I'm crossing my fingers ...
I am going to replace the thermostat housing as several posts indicate is a good precautions/reactioning measure - one question - is it part no: PEL500320 or LR005631. Are there any other jobs i should consider when I'm at it. There is no oil on the inside of the filler cap nor on the dipstick so I'm hoping its not the head gasket at all
