I drove my (new to me) 110 which I fitted with a 300 tdi, and it was not what I had hoped for.
I've been driving a range rover classic for the past 10+ years with a 300 tdi and was hoping the 110 was going to replace it.
Ive fitted anti roll bars to the 110 which sorted the handling, but the gearing was not good.
I did lots of research and was not sure if the disco tranfser box would be to suitable judging from what some people said
Today I fitted the disco transfer box and can tell you it has transformed the way it drives!
WOW!
It is one of the easiest mods to do and has excellent results!

Do you know what one was in it? My 90 gets to 55 and I dont want to go any faster because its feels like its reving a bit. I was going to get a Disc one done in the next couple of weeks along with two other things I need to do to him.

It had the defender 1.4 transfer box and with the 7.50 16 tyres I thought the gearing would be ok but the engine sounded busy and I could pull way in second gear.
The disco transfer box is 1.2 ratio

It'll be fine with 7.50s but anything bigger and the vehicle will struggle. I have the same mod fitted to my 90 and am now in a bit of a quandary as I'd like to fit bigger tyres but I'm sure that the gearing will be too tall. I would really like to try to drive a 90 with a 1.4 transfer box but with 35" tyres. I think the gearing should be more or less close to a 1.2 transfer box with 33" tyres.

I've been looking into swapping my T/box for a Disco one as well but not sure how it would be with 235/85/16 tyres. Would this size of tyre work as good as 7.50's or make things worse?

I think 7.50 16 and 235 85 16 tyres are about 31 to 32 inch's
I can pull way from junctions in 2nd gear if I'm still just rolling.
235 85 16 or 265 75 16 would be no problem as the rolling radius are about the same
A 90 would have no problems at all unless the engine has low power/problem

Engine is ok power wise but like you said in your post sounds busy especially on motorway so was thinking disco T/box will help make it slightly better at on motorway just wasn't sure if i'd need change tyres to get best out of the mod but great if i don't need too.:)

Yes, I've been salivating over those Roamerdrive boxes. But at the sort of prices they charge, not the sort of thing you can buy every day. I quite like the current ratios for all the little rural roads with hills and sharp corners I drive on, but it would be nice to slip it into something a bit higher for motorway and A road cruising.

Iv got an early RRC lt 230 transfer box for my lightweight tdi conversion (its 1.192) will it be too high geared ? only going in a lightweight and wont be doing much towing but id rather fit the right one first time !

It will be fine, go for it.

I would estimate that 50% of the driving I do the standard Defender gear ratio is fine but the other 50% I would like a higher gear.
Fitting the overdrive would give me both.
The negative side is the cost of the Roamerdrive unit, I have seen good reports of them but I would be fitting another gearbox to (a) fail in some way or (b) more gears to make a noise.
I would like to drive a 110 with one fitted just to see how they drive.

Dont forget some gearboxe's have different ratio's so what may be fine on some is no good on other's.

I've had a 200tdi and disco box with 7.50 tyres for nearly 2 years now. (Was N/A and std box)
Before the change I was in 5th at 30 mph and cruised at 50 on a A road
With a cold engine I now change to 4th at 30 and 5th at 40.
When the engine is hot it will trundle along at 30 in 5th, and I cruise at any speed limit.
The engine is of course quieter at any mph. Plus I'm getting. 32 mpg

yes your probably right having driven both a 1.2 and 1.4 on 33's

a 33" tyre is a big as you really want to go on a 1.2 box

I'm looking / could fit larger tyres now i have gone back to a 1.4 running 33"s

Thanks Richard. I think I'll try to borrow a set of 33"s for an hour or so and give the beast a good thrashing before I decide what to do.
