Freelander loss of power at 70mph

Hello Out There

I have seen other threads on this but here is my experience with no solution yet. Took my 02 Td4 infor a 72K service (local recommended garage, not the dealer for the first time) . Came out and found that when doing about 70/80mph I would loose power and was able to push the accelerator to the floor and nothing would happen and slowly loose speed. Got LR Assistance out as I thought a turbo hose had gone, this was not the case. Took to the LR Dealers, they replaced air flow sensor, might have made a slight differance although fault still occurred, checked other hose before exhaust valve ,thought it had a small hole, replaced, no change, inspected other hoses and do not think they are collapsing, replaced exhaust valve, no change, replaced a fuel senor thing on the front of the engine, no change and now waiting to go back for a thorough going over. I avoid motorways now and seems to drive sort of alright at 30 to 40mph although I feel fuel consumption is up and there is definetly I feel more exhaust being produced but not black smoke. Any ideas welcomed.

Hi I have same problem I had diagnostics it came out with code 1470 but doesn't explain what it is,also I had turbo boost valve changed but still the same.

Dear Handyseany

See my post on 6 Feb 2005 under this thread.

It looks to me as if your turbocharger is on the way out. But I hasten to add I'm not a mechanic and might well be talking a load of manure.

But I believe there are bearings within the turbocharger that when not lubricated properly will disintegrate with disastrous effect. Hence the importance of allowing the engine to idle and cool down after running it for prolonged period at high speed.

I don't know if it is possible to have the turbocharger bearings checked for wear?

But you know Landrover, everything comes as a complete part and you can't normally just buy the bit that needs replaced [window regulators being a prime example!!!]

You're not wasting your time and money having your vehicle looked at by a Landrover dealer are you? I haven't a good word to say myself about those I have used in the past.

Are you losing acceleration ? increased smoke. I would check all the rubber vacuum pipes that run to the EGR valve and down to the turbo solenoid valve. I'm on my second TD4 both had the same issues and both had splits in the vacuum lines where they had rubbed/chaffed against clips or other obstructions. this stops the turbo from operating properly .Changed all the vacuum piping around £10 cost for the piping and a little time and alls fine. Worth a try before shelling out to the stealers.

hi all.
I've taken vehicle to 4x4 landrover specialist and he's found problem being Fuel high pressure sensor part costs £120.00 and fitting for £40.00 total £160.00.
he connected his interface obd cost £1,800 and came up with 1470 and highlighted the sensor. So all being well will be fixed tommorow I will let you know if all ok.:)

I got a solution. Get a defender, it won't do 70, nothing to complain about.
That's not a good idea. We Freelanderers like our creature comforts. Buying a vehicle where 50mph or being able to hear the radio is considered optimistic is never going to go down well.
