Hello All,

As the title suggest I am looking at getting a Land Rover. In particular I fancy an old MOD 110. I want something that I can restore a little bit but still use.

I have come across this one that I really fancy, the fact that it has al the radio gear is a big plus as I have a Amateur Licence and can use it all! it looks to be in decent enough condition, I have asked for some more detailed images. The only odd thing is it is advertised as a 2.5n/a, but there appears to be a turbo in he picture of the engine, my theory is supported by the fact that the milage goes from 221k km in 2011 to 56191 miles in 2012 and is currently sitting at 56748miles, so I assume its had an engine swap.

Any wisdom you can offer would be great.

Ta.

Hi,
I beg to differ as there are plenty of them for sale on mod.sales.com.
However, the purpose of my original post was a) to introduce myself to you all and b) having never owned a land rover before I was hoping some more experienced owners could have offered some information regarding what to look for considering a 110 of this age.

Welcome to the loonyzone, mate! :)
No experience of military stuff myself, although I have owned a good number of civilian Landrovers.
My own suspicion is that ex-military kit has had a hard life. And while they paint and maintain the vehicles, they don't necessarily do it very well. Just a personal opinion, others will disagree.

This area is mainly for folk to introduce themselves, and you have done so, well done! :) Try posting your question in the relevant section. Defender section is probably best. And try forum search, I would be surprised if this hasn't cropped up before! ;)

Hey,
Thanks for the response. I have had read differing opinions of the MOD land rovers, many folk believe that although the are driven hard, they are always maintained regardless. As you say everyone has their own view.
I will continue to look further into the forum.

Beg as much as you like, look on Whithams site and ask why the end new are duck egg blue.

I hardly ever read anything about Landrovers, maybe used to decades ago, but you tire of it. I look at manuals and parts books when I need to.
But when I see paint with sand underneath it, it suggests to me that not much care was taken about preparation! ;) Also, my many ex military mates all tell me horror stories of vehicle abuse, both on the road and in the workshop! :( Careful maintenance does not cure all damage.
Try posting a fred in Def section, there will be many here that have owned these vehicles, and they will tell you what they have seen.

Edit. And if you want opinion about particular things, like this engine with the turbo, post some pics, make our lives easier.

I assume you are referring to the engines found in the Project Tithonus vehicles, as in this example. All these vehicles under went a life extension project by the MOD where they took the best of the existing fleet and gave them an update, amongst the updates the engines were reconditioned, not replaced. They also got WOLF wheels, roll cages Exmoor seats.

Do you really think that they reconditioned the original engine? Almost as silly as saying they fitted a Turbo!
