pic request of 265 or 285 wheel bonnet nounted

As per title.. does anyone have this size wheel bonnet mounted.. and how do they find it with weight on lifting bonnet, viability etc.
I'm wondering if it will be just too much, even in getting bonnet to release on catch !!

Biggest I've had on the bonnet is 235's and felt that was pushing it a bit visibility wise.

That'what i was wondering.. hence putting on roof rack. The shear weight concerns me.
Also was wondering if the width would mean it would likely catch windscreen when bonnet lifted as wouldn't want it too far forward i guess.

I'd say don't do it I have my highlift on my bonnet and that's bloody heavy so a wheel will be just mental

I tried putting my 285 on the bonnet and immediately took it off. The visibility was shocking!

235 OK 265 just about OK 285 definitely not OK for vision (standard seats 5,11" )
235 OK 265 OK 285 pushing it , for weight for avg strength male (all with steel rim )
only sensible option for 285 on rear mount . Roof rack takes a crane or team effort

Definitely sticking with roof rack now. Just need to sort fixing properly now.

I figure that a tree strop through wheel would be good to lower it down when needed.

You have to pull the cord and have someone else lifting the bonnet simultaneously.

Or take the wheel off..

I used to run with a 750x16 up front on the bonnet and wil be putting 235/85/r16 up there shortly.

That's what I've done in the past, didn't so much lower it as chuck it off the side like I'm casting anchor! Tie the other end to the rack. I didn't fancy lowering gently as they're bloody heavy and can damage the panels/paintwork even when being lowered gently.

thats what i have and its fine, just make sure you have the later solid rod bonnet prop.

Wolf wheels and 7.50/r16 - isnt that heavy.

Be careful how you chuck them off the rack as they can bounce a surprising amount , and do quite a bit of damage , saw it happen in Australia , with a landcr$r guy.

My 56 year old series 2 had a spare wheel on its bonnet for most of its 450000 miles and as a result some of the curve has gone and the bonnet doesnt sit well anymore, the weight of the wheel and the up and down motion has caused the frame to start to fatigue added to the weakening by rust. The PO then fitted it to the rear door, not a healthy place. The wheel is now inside the tubwhere it should be, I have a good bonnet without a spare wheel fitting waiting to be fitted and the door will be replaced with a tailgate whdn the hardtop is replacedby a canvas this summer.

all sounding pretty good as reasons not to bonnet mount with my 265s, let alone my thought of going to 285s.

When i was with the forces i watched a spare being dropped from a roof, but was a US vehicle.. and boy did it bounce up and smack the vehicle hard. Massive dent in side panel from what i remember. I won't be simply dropping mine lol.

You will need some meaty struts for that, and good mounting points on the bonnet!

I always found having a standard wheel and tyre on the bonnet was a total pain, let alone oversize!

I always carry the wheel against the bulkhead behind the drivers seats. Weight is central, doesn't interfere with visibility at all, and the wheel is clean and dry if you need to change at the roadside in good clothes.

Load space on the bed is already tiny though on the 90 Plus looks good on the bonnet (beauties very much in the eye of the beholder.)

No I don't have a pull release. I have the catch operated manually from the front and a pair of rally style panel catches.

Undo catches.
Lift bonnet with one hand and fish about with the other underneath to release the catch
With catch released, raise bonnet with one hand
With other hand lift and fit bonnet stay in position.

It isn't that heavy what's with you bunch of Jessie's. I take it off if doing some proper under bonnet work, but just checking levels I dont.

Taking it off is easy I just undo the carrier bolts then just lift it off with 2 hands and lower it to the ground.

I am a lanky streak of **** by the way with some arm and leg problems and it still isn't much of a bother.

Gas struts. Ffs. You sound like you should be in a freelander lol
