Ah fair enough mate.. Its just that mine will have an x-charge and winch will be off auxiliary batt. Was just curious if that would affect how i wire it.

I have 2 battery's, I have 1 100 amp alternator, I have 2 winches, and have never struggled even in a long hard straight pull, dont bother with a split charge tips my opinion, I used 2 momentary on off on toggle switches until I bought some carling ones, could always use electric window switches, same thing

Its best to have some sort of isolation inside the vehicle so any external switches or a remote socket is only live when you switch it on as it stops people messing with it.
If you are using the winch commercially I would suggest the vehicle has some emergency stops fitted that cut the power to it.
And to pick up on some one else's comment if you are not 100% certain don't do it as you could easily burn your self and the vehicle.
Split charge, well just do it with the vehicle battery and see how you go, if you have any issues then look at split charge.

Could i use an on/off carling switch as isolator?

That would be to turn off the power to energise the solenoid on the winch
You want to isolate the MAIN feed - to this solenoid so as if there was a major electrical fault, this could be disengaged easily to make the system safe.
to answer the question - No... you shouldnt.

I use both a main isolator frim the battery on the main power cable as well as a small switch isolator so that if I knock the in/out switch accedentally it doesn't wind in the winch

But the only way to do it would be to use it to switch a larger solenoid.
You put a solenoid in the live feed from the battery to the winch, the Carling switch when switched on energises the solenoid so you can then have power to the winch.
You can also put emergency stops in this circuit
