Tools for the job !

Hi to all,hoping to do the odd repair,replacing type of jobs on my 90 so I will need a bit of kit, so much choice nowadays but I am thinking sockets spanners etc, what size set should I go for i.e. 1/2 3/8 1/4. Drive. the halfords stuff looks ok , any thoughts or advice appreciated.

I have the halfords professional 150 piece tool kit. Has all the sockets and spanners you need bar the odd oversize one. Really good quality and I wouldn't be without mine.

Agreed, I got their big tool kit while it was on offer (£150 instead of £300) and used a code to get 10% off ordering it to click and collect. I got fed up with crap tools so bought halfords industrial tool chest and their socket trays, spanners, ratchet spanners to start. Haven't looked back..excellent kit. And have used guarantee twice with no hassle.

Another vote here for Halfords. I have their 200 piece set and I got it on a 50% promo, so paid £150. Absolutely fantastic. Nothing has broken or shown any signs of weakness even with heavy use, and if anything does break then it can be instantly exchanged with receipt!

Three very useful tools for land rover mechs
1, 52mm socket from eBay 13 quid for hub nuts way better than ****ty box spanner
2, prop nut removal tool, get 3/8 version
3, 1/2 bi hex socket for calliper mounting bolts

Also if buying sockets try and get single hex as they last way longer and will grip worn/rusty fixings.

if you know somebody with a halfords trade card you can get the 200 piece set for about £120 and its got pretty much everything you need in it.

good start, but you'll need years of buying random specific tools to cover 99% of things

also thinking laterally helps when you are having a tough time getting nuts/bolts off.. some people are unable to do this and it makes them hooowl. so having a biggee pal helps

In addition to the spanners you need some Solihull screwdrivers. Big and bigger will do the trick.

Agree with others. Try to get use of trade card. I have one. Got the industrial (black one) Tool Chest for 199.99 for whole outfit!!!Couldn't find anything that compared for that money.

And saved a fortune on the tools.

And the torque wrench's which are excellent.

Also stuff like bulbs etc...got some indicator bulbs. Almost 4 quid but with trade card 78p!!!!

Went in on day for some oil, spotted loads of Guns on stuff on clear out...colour tune kits and multimeter.

Bought on trade card which further discounted...3 colour tune kits and multimeter for £20.

I have trade account with a few local factors but they can't compete with Halfords on oil, sockets and spanners, bulbs. Everything else is better elsewhere though.

Its a handy thing to have.

I tried using the trade card in my local halfords and if it's already discounted they wouldn't let me use it. Also not trade card related, but took some broken sockets in a couple of years ago for warranty but the manager refused because I was wearing company overalls he refused the warranty as it wasn't what the tools were designed for??? So sent my wife in with the same tools and they refused to change them for her as she didn't have the original receipt. I'm sure it's isn't the case at every store, but I just gave up with halfords and gave the tools to a neighbour.

I am a fan of Bahco stuff. Did the whole rebuild with a 1/2" socket set, a 1/4" set and a crap load of spanners.

I did however get a set of Bahco reversible ratchet spanners and I'm not so impressed with them as they are a bit too thick for some jobs.
