deteriating performance

hope this isn't a daft question. ut have kept meaning to replace my intercooler hoses, air intake etc for silocone ones

as my current ones when squeezed are very soft and can easily push them in so the sides touch one another

I wondered that when going down the motorway eyc if these hoses can start to collapse in on them selves and start effecting the performance, nog, speed issues

woukd like to when possible to remove the plastic air intake and buy the metal pipes and hoses , but don't know if by removing the plastic section on top of the engine would have much effect

shame the hawkeye couldn't have told me what the bhp or another way of a figure , before and after factor to ensure it's not just an assumption when doing work on the engine

I know the way to tell, is replace them all but the kit costs over £100 and just wondered what ur thoughts were please

turbo blows air into the pipes making them expand outwards. if you have any splits or leaks then the air can escape and pressure drop.. which leads to less air in the engine.. blah blah.. poor performance.

you can somtimes spot the leaks by having someone rev the engine out of gear and feel around for air escaping or fit a boost gauge to see if it's the correct pressure.

sometimes the pipes can delaminate so you have a bit of flappy material inside. once the turbo starts forcing air down the pipe, the flappy bit bends over and clogs up the pipes.

you having issues with the power dropping off?

go for the silicone ones they are much better and last much longer on my old car before silicon ones I had one of these boosters yes it did boost the performance a bit but I got through the turbo hoses I took it off , then I put the new silicone hoses on and I did not buy another new set for the car now I have put them on this car, spend good money once spend cheap and you will spend again. hope this helps

thks guys, I know the subject has been done to death,lol

the engine isn't quiet right, feel a hesitation in it,

have done

fuel filter
fuel pump
egr bypass
inlet manifold removed and cleaned
replaced section of vacuum hoses
new bosch maf
synergy box
engine oil
ird oil
bmw crankcase upgrade
engine oil filter
air filter
diff oil ,sucked out and replaced

vcu is ok

new brakes , discs, pads, shoes etc all round

around 2,000 revs if u stuck ur foot down would notice the difference i i think that's when the turbo kicks in

see I didn't use the word assume,lol

only get abit of white smoke for a few seconds on start up then goes, passes mot emissions test

put injector cleaner through tank

something's just holding it, not much but don't want to just ignore it and wait till it gets worse

that's why im thinking of the simple things like these silicone hoses

see there was someone who removed the plastic air intake system ,but would have to see what the cost is ,could do part of it and then the rest later???

got the sizes etc from off here , including the wider 12 mm t bolt clamps

put haweye on it, showing no dtc faults

think I will check the vaccuum hoses that go ontonthe turbo as I will be honest didn't know they did, how can u tell the turbo is working, it does pul over 2,00 rpm but like i said something's just holding it

just thought maybe the hoses as there really weak if it could cause this issue

could do an engine smoothness test via the haweye to see if the injectors are messing around , also there's this mm3 test, think that's an injector let by test

think there £100 each, exchange , gulp

u mention a boost gauge , where would that be fitted onto please , does it go onto the turbo or can it be put onto the small pipe that's on the egr body ???

needs to be between the turbo and inlet. not sure if there is a nice place on the td4. you may need to drill and tap or your egr bypass pipe has a blank?

tbh i wouldn't worry about your td4, it sounds fine. if there is an issue it'll show itself soon enough

there a pipe on the egr where I imagine u could fit one

but to be honest I think ur right

got s few things to do before the mot is due in April, don't like to leave things last minute

got to

fit my new battery
waiting for the rest of my interior bulbs to turn up
fit a new silencer, found a stainless steel one
fit my towbar and electrics.,

thinks that about it for now

will do the split charge and tow bar after the mot , got to try and pin my son down to help me , but easier said than done, lol

have made sure I've kept up with the servicing each and every year and is very quiet, smooth, does nearly 40 mpg on a run and is a joy to drive , doesn't rattle and great in the snow , etc

abit of an overkill but replace the autobox oil every year,,engine oil and filter the ird and diff oil along with it, it's done 177,000 miles and for the sake of a £100 a year don't think its too much considering what a new ird or autobox costs , done a grand total of 4,000 miles last year

pipe on the egr is vacuum to operate it. you need the turbo air.

funny enough been looking for something to keep my mind occupied and been thinking for a while in getting a second hand engine to restore , to learn and be able to then replace mine

wouldn't care if it took months on end, got a nice shed with electric and a comfortable chair and can potter around whilst sitting down, would just need the help to get it in there and the engine replacement

a neighbour up the road did offer me a TD4 engine but on inspection found it seized solid and looked as thought there was a split it in the block ?? , so gave that a miss

there often coming up on ebay , where they've just been removed for around £250 quid and can hear them before being removed

but maybe another day , expect i will do it one day and keep my busy , just hate this disability not allowing me to do the things I jseto love doing and have to get something to keep my brain going,

could take pictures of it complete then taken apart so the pics may help someone else along the line
