Freelander packed In last week and the garage have said it's the transfer box which has gone, I'm assuming they mean the IRD as freelander don't have a transfer box.

IRDS are massively expensive, so what I'm thinking is, would there be a way to just remove it so the car is front wheel drive?

It's only a road car so 4 wheel drive isn't essential anyway..

When you say IRD I assume you have a Freelander 1. If so the FL1 IRD is like a fixed ratio transfer box. The ird contains the front diff so removing it would mean no diff at the front unless you find something else to do the job. Lots of second hand ird's about. Get it from a good source as fitting a duff one is annoying.

It's an x plate td4 freelander td4.

Do these have a different setup?
All Freelander 1 transmissions work the same way. Some components are different.

The Freelander 2 is different to the Freelander 1 set-up.
