Hello,

So a week ago I changed the oil and oil filter of my 90 300tdi as usual.
Some 100 miles later I checked the oil level and it dropped from the max where I left it to the minimum.

I corrected the level, but then noticed that there was some oil on the floor. I traced it to the oil filter and noticed it was dripping. To my surprise, the oil filter was a bit loose. I tightened it.

Later, I checked again and there was more oil on the floor. I removed the oil filter and the seal seemed to be ok, as it was the filter housing. After re-installation of the filter I turned on the engine and confirmed that the dripping was still there.

I'm almost sure the oil is leaking from the filter/filter housing mating, by the engine block side.

Might the filter be defective?
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

For the cost I'd just slap another filter on then examine the old one against another... Have you done something silly like leave part of the old one in place or buy a filter minus it's rubber.

check fuel lift pump ,they can leak from a manufactured hole in the casing and drip onto filter housing making it appear to be a filter or housing leak ,,,,

Thanks for all the help

When I removed the filter I checked the seal and it seemed (seemed..) OK. I also confirmed that the old one wasn't there.

As for the fuel lift pump, it is an year old OEM with respective gasket.

The filter was a Coopers

Today I swapped it for a MANN filter. The leak was reduced, but it's still there.
I inspected the area and I'm almost sure it is definitely from the filter/housing matting
