New Tyres

Need to replace my 255 55 18's on my P38 .I have run pirelli scorpion STR's for some years and yes they have been ok ,but looking to change as always thought them a little load.There are lots of posts on here over the last 3-4 years but what about today (2014) new generation of tyres...Looking for a good eco tyre that roles well(good on fuel) whilst grips well too. Also would like them quiet if poss ie 71dB or less.... Plenty around for say £125-140 each. But i don't like to just go for what the adverts say,as they are hardly likely to say they are rubbish ..So anyone put new shoes on their lately ?? Any thoughts ??

You need to remember price is not a good indicator these days. Just because a tyre costs £75 doesn't mean it's poor or crap.

I've had V8 muscle cars and high performance cars - a lot of the time cheaper tyres have been a lot better than the more expensive Contis, Goodyears and Pirelli.

I have Nexen on mine at the moment - pretty good!

as said altenzo. mid range & matches/does everything you have stated in your description of requirments. never underestimate cheaper brands this day & age.

That is very true Domino ,hence I ask who has what fitted and how you find them. Not all 109s have the same wall.My brother has an Audi and fitted a like for like 109 and found that the ride was really bad as the wall of the tyre sagged even though they were the same load rate as his previous tyres.Also noted that his fuel economy had changed for the worse ..

My first choice would be Goodyear for the quietness and comfort:

or a little cheaper vredestein

Nexen and Roadstone same but cheaper (was fitted to my car at purchase and are quite good IMO)

Look at the EU stats, the Nexen Rodian comes out better on most counts than the big brands, they are very quiet, no tramlining and a small but measurable improvement in MPG. Very happy with mine

I went from Wranglers to Nexen, the Nexen's are infinately superior and much less expensive.

+1 keith, as stated nothing wrong with cheaper tyres as they have come a long way forward over the years.i recall discussing/advising/supplying your nexens which you are obviously more than happy with,the op asked for a replacement spec tyre & I answered accordingly what suited his needs,+ ive fitted/tried/seen them all basically because I can .personally I run Pirelli scorpion zeros only on my l322 & on my d2 altenzo sports navigator,( next choice would be nexen )

If on the cheapo, why not Roadstone, made by Nexen, same tread, same factory in Korea but sold slightly cheaper

Just fitted full set Continental Crosscontacts on my 4.6 - had hideous cheap budget crap on when I bought the car, soon as funds permitted they were ditched pronto.

The improvement was remarkable - the old crate no longer feels like its on marbles and threepenny bit ones at that.

No disrespect to the posters on this thread, but past experience has told me to be wary of budget brands. If I was running an Astra shopping trolley I wouldn't be concerned but I'm not, so I forked out the moolah and then had to have a visit from nurse when I got home

ott means nothing to me ive seen it all before.

+ they are all scrap when a nail goes in shoulder/sidewall

I've got a set of the Vredestein Wintrac. They're good but I'd say a little noisy.

The Pirelli Scorpion ST and General Grabber AT are quieter and have all the grip you need. I've got General Grabber Snow and they're good too.
