Tensioner pulley bolt came loose. YES it was torqued up, I got very pedantic with the bolts when I fitted this cam belt and triple checked everything so I couldn't doubt myself. Time for a new engine....or a new car

Is that the L Series? Been a spate of L Series belts letting go for various reasons of late! Getting twitchy :eek:

Defiantly, I was considering it on this one but thought torque settings would be fine. I had visions of the next time the belt gets changed struggling to get it off

removed propshaft split prop from vcu quite and easy job to be honest no major struggles splitting from vcu
need to order new 1 from bell when they get back of holiday

has anyone bought vcu of selltot on ebay only I seen this and wondered if there any good item number251588230646
price is about the same as bell engineering

Plan to make it into a bit of a Rally Raid Dakar/Tunis Rally replica, but then we all know about plans......
 
Yeh, I don't think an actual belt has gone - just other stuff impacting on the belt (all-be-it some stuff rather closely related to the belt!). There I was, thought the L Series was indestructable!

No time to spend on the Landie today, been helping my son replace the trailing arm bushes on his Rover 220....

So where's your jack Michael?

It lifts the car up, should be with your spare wheel.
Where's that?
Probably under the carpet in the boot.
Oh have I got to clear all this stuff out to get at it?
Yeh. ....
Its not there.
OK, no matter, I've got a trolly jack. Where's the wheel brace?
Erm, what's that. (repeat...)
OK, no matter, I'm sure we'll get the nuts off. Where's the key for the locking nuts?
Erm, what's that. (repeat...)
That might be a bit more trickey, start it up and reverse it over the pit.
Erm, won't start.

I don't read much to my wife, but I did read her this.

Very funny........
 
After having 1 new tyre, front brakes and tracking, past MOT with no advisories.
Had the headlining off, foam filled the pillars and stuck felt tape to all the overlapping bits of plastic. Lined where possible with closed cell foam sheet (camping roll at £2.50 a go!)
Nice and solid and creaky roof gone.
Next job is to get rid of the centre console plastic to plastic creaks.

That was the previous owner. You should see how it's parked in front of my barn now :p

Picked this 54 plate TD4 S Auto 80,000 mile beauty up for under £2300 on eBay and nipped up to Worcester (where nipped = 4 hours of hell EACH WAY via the M5 on the first day of the summer holidays) to pick it up. Every bit as good as described on eBay, starts without hesitation, no rattles, surges or knocks and engaged gears as it should. Stuck it on the trailer and dragged it back so the work can begin.

Plan is to give a good going over, take out the EGR, replace the intercooler hoses and put in a BMW cyclonic crankcase breather, all fluids and filters, then fit the Synergy box from my previous freely (and the spare pierburg if needed). Once it's all tickety-boo, I'll start working around the drivetrain and brakes before I fit a 40mm lift kit and some mildy oversize AT tyres - something like the Cooper Discover AT. If funds allow, a set of Blindos will also be acquired. Need to talk to SES about one of his low profile rear boxes and track down one of the winch mounts too.

Once the mechanics are sorted, I plan to remove the rear seats, block out the side windows (as per a commercial) and put some kind of rally colour scheme on it. Thinking red for the rear, full colour-coded silver for the front (including changing the black bumper stripes to silver). I also have an idea for the front grille and some alternative rear lights. FIA cage and seats also on the list at some point (nice to have), as is a commercial bulkhead behind the front seats.

Likely to be into next year before this is finished as need to use it as a daily driver Oct - Feb as my XKR will be in the garage over winter and my old D3 is now my wife's car since she sold her 90. That was a sad day :(

Almost seems too good a car to do this to as it's genuinely top notch for a 54 plate with low miles - was looking at cars with 140k plus for more money. I don't doubt there will be some bills along the way, but a lot less than those I was looking at to restore my 1978 Series 3 :eek:

So there we have it..... I've had Series, Defender, Disco 2(v8) and Disco 3, but when it comes to fun and frolics, facelift Freelander 1 is where it's at :cool:
 
Washed it, treated ALL black plastic pieces (NICE and BLACK!), and fitted the British dealer spare wheel cover, that was provided courtesy of the forum member. THIS is the only Hippo in SoCal with this kind of cover! All good.
