Are there any types of noise that the Council cannot deal with?

We can only take legal action in relation to statutory noise nuisances. We cannot normally take legal action, for example, in relation to transport noise. If you are not sure whether we can help, it’s best to contact us directly and we will advise you.
We are also unable to deal with many types of behavioural or lifestyle noise such as

• noise from children playing
• people singing
• shouting
• slamming doors
• the normal use of appliances such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines, DIY tools etc

we had the same issue, from the old git next door when we moved in, and started to refurbish the place

We had a letter from the council ref a complaint saying noise levels, burning rubbish in the garden etc
I called the council and explained what we were doing.
they told me it was standard procedure to send a letter etc blah de blah
We never had another complaint.

Just don't loose your rag with the people next door,its easy to tell them to go #### them selves

I would call the council and tell them what you are doing
rebuilding your car, you aint breaking any laws

I'll not loose my rag with them. Well I would if they pushed my buttons enough. But it's not worth it. They'll be reporting me for threatening behaviour then.

Take reasonable steps and a diary. Chat to the local authority and get their advice over what is reasonable and what is not. If they are onside it will be worth a lot.

I would suggest there is not much he can do. It might be worth paying for a solicitor's advice. If he starts harassment a letter will cool is ardour.

Does he go off the deep end when any of his other neighbours do any DIY?

Ermm, Well I don't do much singing but maybe rebuilding landrovers is my lifestyle so they wont be able to do anything

only thing i can think is noisy from you would be the compressor kicking up, not sure if all compressors are as loud as mine, I think you've been too patient mate.. Give less a #### and crack on. Whats the worst that can happen...

I think the talking with the donut is over to be honest and may actually be detrimental to yourself both legally and sanity wise.
Choose a solicitor and get their card (no money needed for that) and next time he approaches you to start the intimidation and bullying hand him the card tell him you've taken legal advice and any further correspondence must addressed to you through your solicitor then just repeat ad infinitum whilst moving away.

I'd get a tin of blue gloss to hand so when they come round tell them it was all painted with a roller. hide your spray gun. I think that is the thing they would try to get you for.
They can't stop you doing anything else unless they proved you were running a business which clearly you are not.
I'd love to see his face when the red 90 turns up.

I sympathise with you mate' I went thought all this 20 years ago when I was living in Stoke. At least you suspected it would happen, the sh*t who dob me in did behind my back, so I didn't even know any thing was wrong until I got the letters.
Here's a bit of advise it may help you, the hours you're working will be acceptable to the council but don't make any noise on a Sunday, not acceptable, and make sure all the cars you work on are registered at your address. If your brothers landy is registered else where you shouldn't repair it.
When I was repairing cars after I was reported, I would buy the car off the owner for a quid, repair it and sell it back to them for what ever it cost to repair, all backed up by a receipt for the sale. Nothing they could do then.
But apart that keep up the good work:clap2:

Yeah, Compressor is definitely the loudest thing, But to be fair I don't use it that often as I can't be arsed to let it fill up.
I'd do a video to show people how loud it is but I haven't got anything to do it on. Thinking about it I think it's got a sticker on it that says 90db.

Oh yeah, I agree it's the painting they'll nail me on. I know I shouldn't do it but I'm not paying for it done when I'm capable of doing it myself.
As far as I'm concerned it was done with a rattle can and why sell them is shops if I'm not aloud to use them at home

Never new Sundays where not aloud. But if I work all week and only get Saturday/Sunday to work on it then I'd be working on it regardless

Brothers 90 is in my name anyway as it used to me mine.

Good tip on working on others vehicles as I do the odd bit's for a friend.

DazDisco's plan to ring the council is the way to go. You need to introduce yourself and convince them you are sensible, considerate and reasonable. You'll do that by the very act of having the common sense to call them. Then calmly explain to the council the reasonable things you do;

• I remember way back in the thread you saying you don't start with anything noisy until 10am.
• You enclose the compressor in the garage, to suppress the noise.
• You spray in the garage, to suppress the fumes.
• You don't work late at night.
• The frequency of the compressor usage is very low.
• The frequency of spraying paint is very low (its a very expensive process so most work is prep- the actual painting process is brief with large times between coats)
• Most of the work is socket sets and hand tools which are quiet

Your overall message is that the noise and fumes produced do not happen that often. AND being a reasonable and considerate person you have taken reasonable efforts to minimise them. Time limits, working in garage etc. You wont need to say that you are reasonable and considerate, saying the type of things in the list will hit the buttons the council are looking for.

Been looking for a unit for myself as I'd like a bit more room than I've currently got at home, But I don't want to spend £3500+ a year on a unit as it's just dead money

Yeah know what you mean mate, looked at cheapish unit prices last year when I did the welding and new head on Disco. Too expensive with running water and leccy just couldn't justify it.

At least on your own drive you can jump straight on it after work/weekends or whenever you get 5 mins.

A unit is only cost effective if you are doing it all the time. (Oh hang on a minute you are)

Like you say its whatever your comfortable with. No point getting stressed.
If you want to ignore it for now then. Just keep all letters and make a note of date/time you do any loud banging for more than say 1 hour or use compressor.

Anyway stop wasting time on this dipstick and get on with the build threads
