 Alright there topgun!

Your daft. Do you know how easy i tis to steal a defender with a 3 position ignition barrel? And you want to go and fit a push button start!

Im certainly not telling you on an open forum but just use your head and think about that last bit that actually starts the engine. Just rewire it to a switch and mount it.

Yes but I also want to fit a ignition flip switch on the dash so I can remove the key all together? If that's possible?

Will you be using it on the roads? if so I would run this idea past your insurance company they may not want to inure you.
The job its self is very easy to do but you will be removing security from your defender (I know they do not have much security to start with) and making it into a come and play with me any time you want vehicle for any scrote who wants a joy ride.

You know I was thinking about this and I have remembered (see my long term memory is OK) I used to have a 850cc Mini van which had a push button starter on the floor, no steering lock the key to activate the ignition was in the centre of the dash and yes that was nicked set on fire on a nature reserve.
I had just renewed the insurance, the money offered by the insurance company in compensation was less than I had paid in premium (nothing new there because of my age at the time) and because it was a total loss my insurance would stop meaning I would have to pay a new full years insurance if I acquired another vehicle.

I decided not to make a claim and recover the vehicle myself allowing me to keep the insurance running. The problem on doing this was the nature reserve would not allow any vehicle other than directed by them on to the site for recovery so that cost me even more money than I would have lost had I made the insurance claim.

You live and learn I am not 17 now and muck more knowledge now (I think)

Hang on guys! This is for off road only! Building it as a winch challenge truck that's why I'm not worried about security on it as it's living in the workshop that has an alarm! I want to fit a simple ignition flick switch and push button so I haven't got to worry about having the key ect

Genius idea! Come to think of it why dont manufactures fit these as standard? Oh thats right cause its p*ss poor for security!

Having said that i once wired up my next door neighbours old 206 builders van to start when heated rear screen was turned on because the barrel was goosed.
The switch wasn't used as the cement mixer went through the back window! Lucky he had replaced it with plywood and painted it with emulsion, thus keeping the integrity of the vehicles security intact!

I think its a great idea Luke, ignore them who are trying to deride your ideas just make sure you fit a "engine start" decal to prevent confusion.

Regards
Lee

I did this on my V8 110 and just boke into the wire that goes from ignition switch to the solenoid.
Still needed ignition switched on to operate the starter button

go for it;):)
