Hello guys
Bought my first landrover last night and was over the moon with it.
I had finally gotten a landrover like I always dreamed and although it was only a 1999 1.8 freelander, I thought it was perfect. That was until this morning when it started kangaroo jumping really badly and I noticed a circular part around the vcu had broken off. As I'm just a young guy and spent all my money on the car and insurance I was really hoping to fix the car myself. After a quick read online I came to the conclusion that the vcu was knackered. I removed both propshafts and vcu, hoping to have 2wd until I had money for a full replacement. I was even more devastated to find out that with the propshaft off I have no drive whatsoever. The car drove when propshaft was on but jumped really bad and I was afraid I would cause damage.
I've taken a few pictures and I really hope you guys can help me with where to go next. I am gutted as I have always loved landrover and when I finally got one it breaks.

Thanks guys I'll be checking non stop for your replies.

without pictures its hard to say, but the circular part around the VCU is merely a damper and should work fine without it, mines not there any more
I would normally associate kangaroo'ing with fuel starvation

Hey guys,
thanks for the quick replies, Im trying to upload the photos just now so hopefully that will give you a better idea of the situation.
anything else you need to know and i might be forgetting dont hesitate to ask. Ill be doing all the work myself so every shred of advice is appreciated.
Will look over the threads linked right now.

Thanks again

crown wheel and pinion, a bearing set and a new heat exchange unit required.

it will be cheaper to contact austin at bell engineering and get a refurbed unit.

A refurbished ird unit? I'm assuming I'll also need a new vcu to get the four wheel drive back but will I need new prop shafts too? Or are the ones I had on OK?
Would it be the ird that's causing the lack of even 2wd? Or will I need something else to fix that.

Thanks alot guys you have already been a great help, the posts linked were also extremely informative.
Thanks lads

I'll take more pictures tomorrow if you can tell me what would be best to take pictures off I can show you guys and see what you think.

Yeah I read the links but was not sure. So do you think it is the gearbox too?
This is the worst when I am dying to drive it lol.

I drove it on a two and a half hour ride when I got it as well and it was a dream. Can't wait to get back in it and just drive again haha

OK guys hoping to get this sorted today.
If i get a new ird on it so you think that will be enough to get me back on the road until I get a vcu.
Still a bit confused as to whether I need an ird or gearbox.

Yeah by new I meant relative to the one in it at the moment haha. If I can get it on the road then I can get the wife off my back for the time being haha.
Thanks again for all your help guys I'll keep you updated along the way.

if it's the splines on the gbox that are stripped it would be fruitless to fit a new IRD!

If I get the ird off I should be able to check if the gearbox splines are stripped though?
If it is the gearbox splines then could I just change that leaving the ird as it is? Obviously changing the ird when i change the vcu?

Sorry for the myriad of questions guys in just trying to learn this one step at a time.

You can clearly see that your IRD knackered on the pictures. So its not likely that your gearbox is stripped as well IMO.

Am I missing something here...

If you bought the vehicle last night and didn't buy it in the knowledge of knowing about the problem, why are going to all this bother and cost to repair the motor, why are you not taking it back and at the VERY least asking for the seller to repair it or demanding your money back?
