i knew it would not be cheap but a quote of £280.00 seems a p***take to do it

Timing belt kit is £50-£60, labour is a couple of hours max, so an indy should be looking at under £200 easily.

Assuming nothing else is being done at the same time!

on the price of the kit, depending on where you get it there can be a silly variation in price.
I priced one up for my fender from a local motor factor, they were always reasonable on "normal" car bits I nearly fell over when they quoted £160 most mechs round me use them, spoke to one, they could get it a bit cheaper, but not much.

300 TDi cost me £175 IN PARTS !!

Plus another £50 for a S/H timing cover because a previous mechanic put the old one back on when there were only two bolt holes left to hold the fan.

I paid £190 for supply and fit on my defender 200tdi. I was quoted £300 by the big landy independent so I went shopping around. Just check what they intend to fit first. No point in saving money if they are crap and fit rubbish parts.

the other year I too checked my local factor,
well they mucked me about at first, then quoted me £120+

I phoned the landie place at Mersea Island,
got it sent free for half the factors price almost overnight service.
saved me £10 in fuel getting it too !
