Play in the steering

I think you need to loosen the top u/j, this then allows the whole shaft to be moved up into the top u/j the required 1" to allow the shaft pull out of the bottom u/j, if you get my drift !

Thats correct and kind of what I said. I said you have to loosen both u/j's meaning top and bottom.
The top one has an extra long spline so you can slide it up further to remove.
Make sure you set steering wheel right on reassembly!!!

Yeah it's a bloody annoying fault! James how much play did you have before hand and did it make a difference.?!

Big difference on mine - but then I suppose it depends how worn it is.
Mine was from a farm when I bought it and had been run into the ground so it may have been worn more than yours. Saying that I did not notice it untill I removed it and felt it!!!
