Because Ireland has so many thousands of miles of road that are all in far better condition than the UK... no wait, that isn't it. Greedy politicians looking to give themselves a better wage? Yes, that sounds about right... sorry, I mean "green" taxes.

Or the fact that 7% of Irish cars are untaxed and €50 million of lost revenue. No NPR system leaves the system open to abuse. Until recently October 13 you simply presented a form to the Garda to say your car had been off the road and get the form stamped and avoid paying the months / years the vehicle was untaxed. That loophole has been closed off and a similar SORN is in place now

Agreed Landyboots....all a myth, am sorry to say but the Republics politicians let the population down very badly, why they've never been held to account is down to the people. So unfortunately self inflicted.

Its always been a "closed" shop type set up many many levels, dissappointing.

Anyways, though if you emigrated to RoI from another EU country and didn't sell your EU bought car in the first 12 mths you were exempt from VRT?

That's correct Parisien....EU law protects you from the VRT when you are resident in Ireland and own the car for more than 6 months in another juristiction......VRT used to be called import tax and was taken to the European court back in the 90's where the Irish government were told to abolish it because it was a border tax which contravenes EU law on the free market thing so, what did they do?....They changed it to a vehicle registration tax and gave the individual a couple of weeks to declare it.....

Fascists they are and with a nation of sheep, they're getting away with it.
Our prime minister is paid more than David Cameron and Barrack Obama so, we need to have these punitive taxes in order to maintain those salaries

Are you defending this move?......how can you call the old system abuse when you are asked to pay road tax of £1000 on a vehicle that's worth £400. A friend drives a TDI Disco that is worth this amount yet he is required to pay £1000 annually for road tax......Who exactly is being abused here?

Why, wasn't it challenged again, merely by changing title of something doesn't mean the thing has changed.......shameful.

As you see I live in the north, at times I feel for my fellow citizens south of the border, a lot of very, very unfair things going on.

I don't see why the road taxes aren't age related, sure a hefty tax when new, but not when 5/10/15 yrs old when their value is just a small proportion.

I won't be retiring down south thats for sure.

All culpable....to a lesser or greater degree....note lesser or greater, those who were responsible to look after the state ( politicians/offcials), its finances, economy effectively just looked after themselves, lined their pockets, failed to act in the interests of the population as a whole.

The wealthy part of population until the 80s/90s had a huge mount of wealth squirreled away overseas and until part of that was repatriated the economy as a whole was always capital poor, then the EU started it all off by funding various projects...the rest is history

I'm on the ferry in the morning Datatek.... That must be the road tax on the fuel system that they used to operate here. It was back in the 80's I think that the government introduced the road tax disc system and forgot to remove it from the fuel....So, we are now paying double road tax

Diesel is cheaper here than in the UK, currently about €1.26 a litre but we do have tolls on the autoroutes, however the national routes are good and not too busy so you can travel the country without tolls.

Its what I do Datatek, unless pushed for time, such a lovely place to drive and own a car..........but France lost its place in petrolhead heaven several decades ago.......great to be a tourist in though!

Firstly I am not being drawn into a political debate but IMO the good people of Ireland (republic) have had it to good for too long, myself included I own properties there and to put things in prespective a thousand or two to tax a vehicle of YOUR choice when there are €0 council taxes to pay €0 water charges to pay what's the problem ! 1.43 euro a litre here and tolls on any motorway.....As for national routes, some are good, most are crap and always busy. As for secondary roads. You should check out the youtube video where the guy from Cork goes swimming in a pothole outside his house.....I kid you not.

You are absolutely correct. It is still a border tax but the cozies in the EU don't now see it that way....
