rough tick over update

hiya

wished to come back and update you guys

i stripped all the inlet manifold off, soaked it overnight and blasted it out with the karcher,

the checked all the hoses , connectors etc to see if it was something simple

see if u can spot it in the picture , lolol

the left hoses i just left there and nkw installed new ones

one went to the egr blank and the other further up which is also a blank when i removed the egr valve

it looks as though the vacuum pipe was resting on the intercooler pipes and burnt. a hole through one of the pipes

well the tick over seems alot better and also the white smoke has gone

was wondering how this little hole can effect the engine so much and if someome could be so kind to explain the system a bit better please

it just seems like a totally new engine, pulls better, flat spot gone , but the lines then seem to go round to the brakes etc

i had to put all the old hoses back on for now until i can afford some silicone ones,

there is also a sensor tucked away on the left hand side of the air inlet plastic air box where the air hose and intercooler hoses connect onto it, when i removed the sensor the hole it went into was blocked with crude , clean it all out

am so pleased it was something simple but if i hadn't removed the inlet manifold would have never noticed it and so surprised of how a little hole can effect the engine so much

i didn't just blank them off at the source due to the mot etc.

can't quite follow it all ..
the egr valve is 100% disconnected from the vacuum system ?
as is the egr vacuum solenoid ?

and the hose with a hole in it ..
it's connected to the operative vacuum network ??

( and the hippo "auto" version has no part of the vacuum system
( connected to the gearbox ??

if the answer to that is "yes" ..
then i have a theory ( and Only a theory

thats what i cant work out, on the engine block i could have just pulled both hoses off, and plugged them off, then at the other end its already got a blank inside the hose,

could it have been all the crap inside the inlet manifold , or on the plastic intercooler section , on the left hand side there is a small sensor, when i removed it was choked with crap and had to clean out the hole with a screwdriver and blasted it out with the karcher, then use electrical cleaner on the switch

it has gone from around 18 mpg to around 33 mpg, as i ran 10 gallons through it and its done around 330 miles , thats motorway driving and with ac on and cruise control on

will though replace all the hoses. and get the synergy updated when finances improve

cant wait for my son and i to get this second hand engine with around 40,000 miles on it then strip it down and spend about 7-8 months redoing it,

but know a recon auto box and ird will be where the serious money will be

just seems to be a different engine at the moment but maybe its the millers as well

may i ask what is ur theory plse

on the left hand side there is a small sensor, when i removed it was choked with crap

on the intake manifold .. curb-side/passenger-side
i think be the MAP sensor.
so if that's screwy .. it won't report the proper manifold pressure ( turbo boost ) to the ecu

well .. IF that hose with hole be an operative part of the vacuum network ..
( and the auto gearbox has no vacuum connection ) .. then ..

if the egr is cut off from the vacuum system
the only two things left are the brakes and turbo

of those .. it's only the turbo that will effect engine running ..

so Maybe the vacuum leak .. caused an air/vacuum fluctuation .. pulsation ..
to affect the turbo vane actuating system .. vane flutter ..
so upsetting the air intake flow .. which might/would effect the maf sensor ..
causing a bit of weirdness with the fuel injection ..

as rpm rose .. said fluctuation might have been smoothed out ..
more so than at idle .. or low rpm ..

that's only a theory ..
as i don't the precise operation procedure of the turbo vacuum solenoid mechanism

sounds like fun
may have other benefits apart from gaining a rebuilt engine

i'd like to do that myself on a td4 or V6 .. just for the experience

rebuilt a motorcycle engine with good results ( moto-guzzi )
and a few non-descript ( as i can't remember the makes ) farm-equipment motors
