Hi,

I've just bought a Land Rover Defender 110 1990 2.5 TD and am going to give it a service, just wanted to see which oil you guys would recommend, i have some Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 FUlly Sythn and wondered if this would be ok?

Thanks
Howard

regular changes with cheap oil is far better than leaving it longer with expensive stuff, it aint a hi tec engine, dont put hitec oil in it :)

I wouldn't have put synthetic oil in. I've been using semi synth since I got it but now I've gone back to mineral and it hasn't done me any harm whatsoever. Mines a 200tdi but can't imagine there's a huge difference in fluids for a 2.5td

I just use any 15w40 tractor/heavy duty engine oil we have lying around. Anything around the same spec will do the job. The difference between cheap and expensive oil is the cheap stuff doesn't have as many additives so is best to change it more regular. Don't go near the really cheap oil as it is quite often full of ****. I've seen this both on the farm and at work and its not worth the risk.

Are you doing all the fluids, transfer box, gearbox and axels?
We bought a 1989 2.5TD in March and did the lot. The knowledgeable ones on here said run it 3000miles and then do the oil plus filter again then back on every 5-6k

We also have just discovered putting 2 stroke oil in with the diesel at a ratio of 250-1. It works a treat, gives it more low end torque, hardly any smoke on start up and the engine is quieter.

All the best and happy motoring.

I've heard of using 2 stroke before and wouldn't mind giving it a go but how much should I be using? In layman's terms, I can't do ratios. For instance how much should I add to say 40 litres of diesel

would it not just be 40 / 250 ?

Gives you 0.16 of a litre. so maybe round up to 200ml?
