New Exhaust.

So, did the weekly 60Km round trip shopping trip today with the new exhaust fitted.
Filled up with diesel ready for the off tomorrow and re-set trip 2. Now, this I find interesting, normally I would expect to see the consumption on the message centre get up to between 23 & 24 mpg. Today with the new exhaust it got up to 28.1, seems to have more bottom end too, bonus!
The new exhaust is a Double S stainless cat back system.

Complete system assembled to check.

New centre box.

One of the two rear boxes.

New cross pipe.

The old pipe that had come away from the centre box an sheared off at the joint over the axle, it was perforeated in several places.

All in all very happy, cost me 35% less than a mild steel one cost in France and the improved fuel consumption is an unexpected bonus.

I can certainly recomend Double S, the system is very well made

Very nice. The trouble is that we have no idea how much a mild steel one costs in France so no idea how much it cost!

I was quoted €800 plus fitting for mild steel here. Paid £513.60 including delivery for the stainless one.

I had a SS exhaust on a car I had some time ago.
I had it for 12 yrs and the exhaust looked the same after 12 yesrs.

Will be interesting to see how you get on with the fuel consumption.

I changed my middle box a couple of weeks ago. Usually I get around 400 - 440 miles to a tank of diesel, but I've filled up twice since replacing the exhaust and got over 500 miles per tank both times.

I did an oil change at the same time, but I change my oil every 5,000 miles and don't usually see a significant change in fuel consumption afterwards.

I put a new exhaust on my 4.0 2001 p38 recently, including downpipes.
My mpg went up from 12.5 to about 14.4 (in the hills) and from 18 to 21 on motorway.
Unexpected benefit...

Had similar jumps in other cars I've had. I think maybe the wadding in the silencer becomes loose with age and starts interfering with flow.

Unfortunately it does not matter if you have cheap plastic milk cartons or expensive stainless steel ones. The milk in them will still go off.

yes and I believe that does include the internals.

as I said I had one on a car for 12 yrs. When I sold it the guy pointed the exhaust out as 'that was expensive mate to put that on just before you sold it'

I had a set of all singing and dancing flexible specs once. Cost a bloody fortune guaranteed for life. Apparently life was eighteen months later when they broke according to the shop.

If its well know make you should be alright .
But some not so good ones are fitted with steel baffles and they are not guaranteed .

It's Double S, they have been around a long time. The SS exhaust has been on my MR2 for 20 years now and looks like new. The OEM one on the P38 was 5 years old, the welds to the centre box had broken away and the pipe was holed in several places.
On the run to the Pyrenees with some short commutes in the mountains, total 1200Km all on back roads it averaged 26.986mpg with the new exhaust and I was not hanging about, lots of peddle to the metal on the climbs. I would have expected 22/23mpg from past experience, so a 4 mpg improvement is significant

When mine rots I too will be going the SS route
