Hi all,
we will be replacing the clutch on our 02 TD4 very soon had a quote from our garage who have quoted us on a new Duel Mass Fly wheel is this part of the job must we fit one? or do we just fit a new clutch & slave cylinder.

You don't have to fit 1, just makes sense as it's all apart anyway.

I asked at the local garage where I had my MOT today how much he would charge to change the clutch in my '02, TD4 when it comes due and he quoted £160 labour + parts. This price is for "Cash".
He is quite experienced on Landies, including the Hippo. When asked about the DM Flywheel he said that there is no need to change it for changings sake..he crack detects them before making the call.

you should do dmf is part of the clutch in that it now has the damper springs and not clutch plate

Of course he checks it for wear, he is not that stupid !! but also checks for fatigue. He has a very good reputation and is well versed on L.R's. If the part was worn he would say change it without hesitation. I think that there is a fair amount of paranoia being bandied about regarding DMF's from what I have been told from various sources in the trade, including Main Stealers.
It will soon be a case of changing the IRD and rear diff when replacing the VCU "Just in case"

you can see at a glance if face is damaged testing shows ignorance of dmf ,but its not that that goes its the springs ,after youve fitted a few clutches then have to remove box again you find its not paranoia,its just not understanding what their function is

Fit solid flywheel conversion kit, end off.

I would change the dmf , some on ere have NOT , and had problems with juddering etc

Sorry but once again we have to disagree, the DMF concept is two steps forward and three steps back. The Td5's torque delivery ain't that harsh either.

Have you converted a DMF to solid flywheel or just taking Google at it's word. Re read some of my old posts, I'm not a stranger to the conversion.
