I think their picture is reversed somehow! I'm not 100% sure about the ECU/gauge positions as the drawings I have are pretty vague, but I'm certain about the third sensor for the fans as I have one car with and one without and I've tested the function. The 3rd sensor is just a thermal switch.

The 3rd sensor position at the rear of the engine is either the aircon fans sensor for over temperature or it has a blanking plug. I have both versions and I have seen the same configuration on 2 other P38's.
Cylinder bank 7 is the give away, there are only 6 cylinders

It's all a little vague Keith. Aircon water temp sensor is shown as X304 connector C0890. Sensor is clipped to inlet pipe from engine under dash. X114 gauge sensor connector C0196D. X126 ECU temp sensor connector is also shown as C0196D. But only problem with that is only one position is shown for it in location views. Although it does say there are two it only shows the one behind the injection pump. The other location is not shown. So that is why you refit the same colour of sensor you take out. Green for ECU, Brown for gauge sensor. Obviously the Aircon water temp sensor must have been moved from the inlet pipe to the head on later versions as i said earlier, from 1999 on. But i have no reference to that in my copy of RAVE.

As far as i can see Aircon coolant temp sensor was on the inlet pipe from engine to heater matrix up to 1999. Then it was moved to cylinder head. Hence the confusion. There is no third temp sensor on the head on a 1995 engine.

I thought third sensor for aircon only came in in 1999. But my 1995 with aircon diagrams show it. But it's just another STC2253.

There are infact four sensors to choose from starting at the rear STC 2254 rear BKACK 2 pin air con, middle green 2 pin stc 2298 ECU, front BROWN PRE air con 1 pin water , front BLUE air con fitted NSC 100820 water ! Obviously if you have no air con you will not have the black one and water brown 1 pin if you have air con you will have the black one and the blue 2 pin water one that is simples !!!

If you fit an early head to a later model you will have a spare connector and would have to fit the sensor. If you fit a later head to an earlier engine you will have a sensor but no connector. But STC3256 will be doing the job anyway. But yes confusion is king with this one.

The aircon coolant temperature sensor is still present on the matrix pipes even when the sensor is fitted to the head. The one in the head on the diesel on the post 99 is simply to bring the aircon fans on in an engine overheat situation much as is done by the ECU on the petrol.

That's sorted then. No mention of anything like that in my version of RAVE Keith. Must get a newer one. It says it's 1999 on it must be telling lies and there is a further update than that.

What I can tell you is that both sensors are there on my late 2000MY and the block sensor is a thermal switch which is across the tristate aircon switch same as the mod I do for the aircon fans, only difference is that it operates at too high a temperature to be useful.
I ended up checking all this out when I was trying to help a guy on here with gauge problems. Being old I cannot for the life of me remember which of the other 2 sensors is gauge and which is EDC

For once I'd admit that you are actualy right and the only and best solution it to replace what ever colour you took out
