I have no heat shield over the manifold or turbo

Currently not having any problems, but what long term problems do you think I'll encounter?

Fires if oil gets on the manifold!!

Usually no real day to day problems other than hotter under bonnet temps but you should have one. LR put them in for a reason. Easy enough to fabricate or get someone to make one for you.

thanks, well when I can be bothered I'll make a nice shiny stainless one and rivet some heat proof matting on the underside

does yours often spit oil out onto the maniold?

I was more worried about the heat making the cooling hose just above it brittle

No but it is near a high speed spinning device full of oil! Nah to be honest you'd be really unlucky if any large quantity of oil found itself on that side of the engine. Cooling pipes eventually may fail but they carry hot fluid anyway.

You can pick up a nice sheet of aluminium heat shield on the online auction site for a few quid. Just cut and bend into shape using an old one as a template. I saw one that someone dis one and it looked really neat and simple but effective

Good idea - but I've no old one to work with haha

Nah, just drill a few holes in the bonnet. :0

Actually there are two perfomance related issues, one is to keep the intake air cool (more dense) so there's more oxygen and better combustion and the other is to keep the exhaust gasses hot (less dense) so they move faster and "scavenge" or suck exhaust out of the cylinders rather than making the piston physically push it all out. A third issue would be to protect other engine compartment components from getting too hot. I can think of three, aircon system, EAS compressor and the infamous fusebox which is already prone to loose circuits, dry solders, overheating components and so on. If you don't like making a shield you can try wrapping the header pipes with heat tape. There is a debate about how effective this is but get a nice fluorescent colour and it will look (ahem) cool?
