My mate Lee patched the chassis rail yesterday then we had an investigation of the passenger footwell and discovered the bulkhead out rigger (as well as most of the footwell) is fubared.

That's not too much of a problem, a little more welding than I was hoping for but totally doable.

But, when I re-attached the battery (which I now notice has a crack by the +ve terminal and is leaking a bit of fluid and will be replaced today) it'd turn over but no sign of firing at all. Sounded like no fuel to the engine so to check took the fuel line off injector number one and asked Lee to crank it. He turned it for half a second and nowt came out. Went to try again and the battery had given up.

I'm wondering if he might've fried the tank fuel pump wire in the chassis or someit?

Going back over this morning with an uncracked battery and some wire.

Any clues as to what I should be looking for..?

Your fuel lines and in chassis loom are on the off side, sounds like you broke the battery getting the terminal off

If the battery was goosed was it turning the engine over fast enough?

I am going to assume it is a 2.5 or a TDI engine you have, in which case there is no pump in the tank.

If he only gave it a short crank that injector may not have been due to fire. If the engine had JUST fired that injector the last time it was turned or was on etc then it wouldn't be due to fire for just under another 4 revolutions of the engine. So redo that test again and see if your getting diesel, crack off 1 and 2 and spin the engine and watch for diesel at these injectors. If nothing, keep reading.

Look at the back of your injection pump, there is a wire, with the ignition ON, pull it off and then refit, do you hear a clonk? If yes then your fuel solenoid sounds to be working thus should be letting fuel into the injection pump - if not you may have damaged the eletrics to this somehow, or it's just failed.

Now look at the offside of your engine, near the back for a little unit with TWO pipes connected to it and a little lever, that is your lift pump which sucks diesel up from the tank and pushes it into the injection pump.

At the filter head undo the bleed nipple up top and move the lever a few times, IF the lever feels stiff then good, keep going, diesel should start to pour out of the bleed nipple, if the lever feels sloppy, crank the engine for a quick blimp to get the lift pump off cam, now operate lever, diesel should come out now.

At this point, it confirms that you are getting diesel as far as the filter head and the injection pump should be letting diesel in, we will assume that diesel is going from the filter to the injection pump in this case because this all worked fine beforehand.

Looks like it, someone has been a bit overzealous with the spanner.

There's that and the fact it's probably fallen through the floor on more than one occasion! The battery does still get enough juice through to start it but I think I might get it replaced before my new seat box goes in!

Turns out that the red wire had come off the back of the ignition switch, which is still hanging loose after I lost the keys last week. Refitted and 'ee's working fine.

Thanks for the advise though, I'm going to have a look at what you mentioned so I know what's where.

Now, what to break next?
