Hi

I have a 1998 2.5 DSE P38 which I got about 6 months ago.

I have a major problem with the transmission (I think).

The car runs and drives great most of the time but when it comes to a long hill the gearbox goes into a limp mode and the car won't go over 50-60 MPH. If I pull over and turn the engine off for about 10 seconds then it drives fine again.

It is not showing any fault lights, no fault codes via the OBDII and no historical fault codes.

Fluids are fine as are the filters - all renewed in an attempt to fix the problem.

I would be grateful for any input.

Cheers, Ron

How do know it is the gearbox and not an engine issue?

If there are no messages on dash, engine is losing power and only does it up hill, odds on your lift pump is not working.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. The reason I have presumed a transmission problem is because it went to a Landrover Discovery specialist who has said the box needs replacing. They had the car for a week and their was no mention of an engine fault.

I just wasn't comfortable with the diagnosis.

What revs are showing when this happens? Up hill with the accelarator floored it should drop to third, plenty of revs and away you go. However if the engine is short of fuel even if it drops a gear not much will happen. It will most likely not show any fault codes.
I think the garage may not know what is wrong and just chose the most expensive bit. Of course if the box is not changing gear or has clutch slip that's another matter.

Hi

The car will be driving at normal revs. When the problem occurs the revs drop but I can't recall exact figures (it's over a month since I drove it. However when in fault mode and I kick down or manually drop a gear the revs change very slightly but no power,

Prior to the fault condition i.e. before any hills, kickdown and gear change function perfectly.

Look at lift pump, but first make sure pipe is connected to MAP sensor from under manifold, make sure it is sound not blocked and connected. Maybe no turbo boost.

Thanks for all the replies.

I will have a look at the lift pump. One question, are they repairable or are they a replacement item?

Cheers, Ron

Not repairable normally. Unless it is blocked by gung in the tank even then it would be better to clean tank and fit a new pump.
