Exhausts

I have bought two performance rear back boxes for my 4.6 v8. How do you know if the exhausts are going to be legal for roaduse? I have heard that they need the BSI kitemark to pass MOT and be legal.

Any help would be much appreciated.

i think you're right mate as my brothers mr2 has a very loud japspeed exhaust that passes every year but he does have to put the cat back on for mot.

Wammers - what's the current regulations concerning cats? I don't have the latest MOT testers handbook. Does it state that if cats were originally fitted they have to be there? And does a comprehensive list exist for reference?

yeh was woondering about that , new eu rules for the mot i have seen a copy of it inc towbars/electrics etc as goes for the cats i will cross that bridge when i come to it

You shouldn't have any issues with the back boxes, so long as they aren't dangerous so are attached securely to the vehicle then you shouldn't have a problem. With regards to other peoples comments about cats, it has always been law that any vehicle from the 01st of June 1991 that was fitted with a cat had to have it present for an MOT, unless your MOT tester didn't mind so long as it passed the emissions. I used to have a Mk2 1991 MR2 that had a blue flame stainless sports exhaust and decat pipe on and every year I had it MOT'd I had to prove to various MOT stations that because mine was built in May of 1991 that by law I was allowed to remove the cat and didn't have to have it present for the MOT.

There has never been a requirement to specifically check for the presence of a cat in the MOT until 1st Jan this year. As long as the vehicle passed the emissions test, a cat was not checked for in MOT and the vehicle could not be failed for not having one. Except for the ambigous "Check that no part of the system is missing". It has always been illegal not to have a cat fitted to vehicles used on the public road and manufactured in or after 93 under construction and use regulations. All newly manufactured petrol vehicles from 93 had to have a cat fitted by law. But until now it has not been an MOT fail to remove them. Now it is.
